Camping suggestions needed for Escalante

I'm meeting friends from Germany between June 2 and June 5 in Escalante.
They are not into camping and will stay in Escalante in one of the motels there.
That's nothing for me, so I will camp nearby.
Any ideas of good spots where I also can drive back to my camp at night?
I thought of Calf Creek, but the campground will be filled up when I come back from my Coyote Gulch trip that afternoon.
So I need alternatives.
I thought of the camp spots along Old Sheffield Road, they are nice and I like the view from there.
Any other ideas for 3 consecutive nights?

There are a couple of RV parks in town that have tent sites. You could also try the Petrified Forest State Park. We found several great places to camp along Hole in the Rock Road but they were pretty far down. The Devil's Garden isn't too far and also has tent sites. Oh, and Nick, you can PM me your secret site, too. We'll be out that way in 199 days!!
