With our move settled and getting used to the routine of our new work places it's time to start backpacking again. Despite the smoky summer.
Lacey and I headed into the mountains Saturday knowing thunderstorms were on the forecast. While this may have deterred some, the two of us saw it as an...

My brother and I decided on doing this loop in the Sawtooth Mountains:
Day 1- Redfish Lake to Hell Roaring Lake (10.25 mi)
Day 2- Hell Roaring Lake to Edna Lake (10 mi)
Day 3- Edna Lake to Redfish Lake (14.25 mi)
This ended up being a total of 34.5 miles.
We originally planned to...
Five of us - 4 from Houston Texas and a local from Ketchum - did a 3 1/2 day trek from Redfish Lake inlet to Pettit Lake (Tin Cup TH) during the week of August 18-22. The route was as follows:
Tues: Redfish inlet to Cramer Lakes
Wed: Cramer Lakes to Lake Edna
Thurs: Lake Edna to Lake Alice via...
Hello again BCP!
I'll be skipping on posting here for my Wind River Range trip as it's nothing new or crazy, plus most of the people here I assume have been to the Winds given that tons of posts here about the winds inspired me to go there (they were awesome). Although super crowded with people...
Hello everyone. It's been a minute. First things first, the new; I got a new 4k video camera! So my videos are finally 4k! Second, in the video I keep saying Myers Creek Ranch for some reason. I have no idea why I kept saying it when I meant Sheep Creek Ranch.
Summary: Originally we planned 3...
Between March and September of 2019, I hiked an absolutely amazing route through the heart of the West. I began atop a "sky island" on the Arizona/Mexico border and finished in a deep, dark ancient cedar and hemlock forest on the Idaho/Canada border. And in between, I saw a lot of cool stuff!
I...
Me and 3 buddies all from Salt Lake planned a trip to the Sawtooths. Drive time was 5 hours, not terrible especially considering the hot springs pit stop. Trail of choice was the Alpine Creek trail located at Alturas Lake.
We are all hammock hangers and found great spots to camp at all the...

My summer backpacking season was a bit of a letdown this year. I got 3 nights out, but had planned on 7 or 8, with my biggest trip entirely falling through, so I had been feeling a bit frustrated. Additionally, I had a trip planned with @scatman for October 5-8 in Wyoming, but...
A few weeks ago I embarked on a 12 day trip to Idaho and Alaska. The first stop on my trip was to visit @Ben and his fiance Brittinei for a few days of backpacking in the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho. The Sawtooths had been high on my list since reading a bunch of Ben's reports a few years...
The Nez Perce Trail/Magruder Corridore basically runs from Conner, Montana (approximately 7 miles south of Darby, MT) to Elk City, Idaho. Much of it is sandwiched between two wilderness areas, the Selway-Bitterroot to the north and the Frank Church River of No Return on the south-some 3.5...
In August 2017 I set out on an 8 day solo hike in the Sawtooth Wilderness of Idaho (link to my very detailed blog post with tons of pictures).
I created a High Route that included several days of off trail hiking and some remote sections of the wilderness:
Here's a breakdown of the route...
My plans for the last month for Labor Day were all over the place, go to Wydaho and deal with too many people, go see family in Utah, stay home and hibernate. Very late Thursday night as I was heading to bed I decided I needed to join friends on a backpack trip into the Frank Church Wilderness...

My big trip for summer 2017 was in the Bighorn Crags located in central Idaho in the Frank Church-River of No Return Wildness. This wilderness area is absolutely gigantic. It's listed as 2,366,827 acres. For comparison, Yellowstone NP is just over 2.2mm acres, and the High...
In 2015, I had the opportunity to hike in the Tetons with @Ben (along with a few other members here). It was the beginning of new friendships and new trails for me. In April I spent time in Canyonlands NP and on the Colorado River with Vegan and 2 others. We talked about a trip with Ben in the...
We went to Black Magic Canyon in Idaho this last weekend. We were told that Black Magic Canyon wasn't worth going all the way to Idaho, but it was supposed to be great if you were already in the area or passing by. We loved it! It was the highlight of our trip and I thought it was well worth...
This part of our trip to Idaho last week. Craters of the Moon is a National Monument in Idaho. It is a series of tubes and caves carved out 2,000 years ago. There is a large lava field covered in volcanic rock. Because we had little kids, and I was carrying a child carrying backpack, we could...
I mentioned that those of you who shared your reports and photos had inspired me. Last Spring I talked a redneck friend of mine (not sure if he's still married) and a couple hillbillies from Kentucky into joining me on a loop beginning at Pettit Lake, wandering past Alice, Toxaway, Edna...
Nick's post here http://backcountrypost.com/threads/river-snorkeling.3854/#post-44736 about River Snorkeling intrigued me and I have been wanting to give it a shot for a while now. On Labor day I took my 3 boys with me and we tried it out. Because this was new to us I was a bit hesitant and...
Although I'm not a regular BackcountryPost user, I recently received some very helpful feedback from @Bob about a loop I wanted to execute in the Sawtooths of Idaho, and thought I'd return the favor to the BackcountryPost community by posting a trip report. Here it is. Thanks for the help.
