This was originally going to be a trip with a full crew of 8 people. Due to various circumstances, that group got whittled down to 3 by the time the trip rolled around. After finishing the route, I think it was for the best because some of the others were first time backpacker...
Day Two. I did not know what to expect to see on this day, but hoped our views would be a little less woodsy than yesterday. I did know the goal was to hike nine miles to campsite 6D2 located near Mountain Creek, almost the same distance as yesterday.
Before we left camp there would be...
Planned this year to go with @Bob for loops through Bear Basin and/or across the Divide to fish the lower Fitzpatrick Wilderness. Also made plans for one of my favorite off trail fishing spots in the Popo Agia Wilderness. The weather and the mountains had other plans.
Bought tickets in January...
I've been wanting to do a trip like this one for a few years now, finally found the time & courage to make it happen. Despite not getting a terribly great pick in the new YNP backcountry lottery system, I was able to get almost every campsite I wanted on the dates that I needed them. Initially...
Now where was I before I was so rudely interrupted? Oh yes, day seven of a ten day adventure.
First, here is the link to days 1 trough 6
Days 1 through 6
Day 7 - Campsite on Tributary of the North Fork of the Yellowstone to Campsite on Unnamed Pond below Unnamed Peak 10,962 - 8.46 Miles...
I was going to post the entire report as one report, but as I was working on day seven, I reached the maximum limit for uploading images, so this part will be days one through six, and I'll finish seven through ten in a different report.
Come November, after my last backpacking trip in October...
Met Oldbill in Pinedale, originally was headed over to the east side for some fishing, but iffy weather changed our plans.
Stated out from Elkhart TH, crowded which was surprising for September. All in all by the end of the trip we saw over 80 hikers.
Not any pictures till the requisite Photo...
I'll preface this by saying I was bluff charged by a grizzly on day 2. I notified the BCO about the encounter after hiking out, and within a day or two they updated the backcountry situation report with an accurate location.
I've been wanting to hike this area ever since our first time...
Or ...................................... Scatman's revenge route. Enjoy the first installment in pictures. You will have to wait for Scatman's, Tractordoc's and wsp_scotts detailed and embellished picture and word version.... Great trip, great company and a few brutal days......... pics with...
This year - for the first time - my oldest son joined my brother and I on our yearly "guys trip". Obviously we cut down the intensity a lot from our normal trips, but this one ended up about as special as any of the others. And very relaxing, too!
I'd always had Silas Canyon flagged as a...
So after last year's trip to Younts Peak, I joined some friends in the Sierra Nevada and apparently couldn't shut up about the Absarokas - so they decided to join up with me this year for a trip. I drew up a route that looked pretty fun - much of it was territory I've covered before, but with a...
Took a little day trip up to 11,000 feet, near Medicine Bow Peak, in search of golden trout. Haven’t caught one in 6 or 7 years, when I lived in the Wind River area. I’ve had a really bad golden trout itch and I needed to scratch it. These are one of few trout species that I truly marvel at...
The Wyoming Range.
Why the Wyoming Range? Good question.
Last year, @Bob had sent me some routes that he created in CalTopo of potential future backpacking trips. One of the routes, was along the Wyoming Range Trail, which is a National Recreation Trail, that runs just off the ridge of a...
Day 1
Stopped to pick up Scatman at the Willow Creek TH...... In a huge downpour........ Indicator of things to come?!
Met Dreamer in Daniel Junction and dropped his truck at end of road in Horse canyon (he could only go 5 nights)
Grabbed some lunch at the Daniel Bar & Grill....... Headed out...
Thanks to @ImNotDedYet I was able to join him and @Bob following @scatman’s Rescue Ck hike. We lit out just before 2p with a little under 5 miles to walk. It was a very pleasant stroll along the old two track of a trail in lovely weather. We landed in camp near 5:30, set up and ate right off and...
This hike was a little bit of an afterthought honestly. I originally thought about doing this or Garnet Hill as a day hike, but when I saw that the backcountry sites were pretty much wide open, I decided I'd grab one (while I did enjoy the excitement of the old mail in system for big trips, it...
I was lucky to join in on this @scatman organized backpack to Yellowstone NP on short notice just after arriving in Wonderful Wyoming. The weather prediction was pretty grim with rain at 70% and lows in the thirties, highs in the low sixties at best. Everyone, the Scat clan and three hangers on...
We flew out for Bozeman the evening of May 28, had quite the ordeal with a flight delay during our connection, and then a giant mix up at our hotel when we finally arrived, that couldn't be remedied at 2am. We dozed off for a few hours, then woke up at 6 to shower, get the rental car, and grab...
About two weeks before my trip began, I kept a watchful eye on the weather forecast for Mammoth Hot Springs. As the days drew nearer and nearer to my departure date, the forecast became more and more ominous. When I finally started to pack my gear, it definitely looked like a rainy trip was in...
One plus of the Yellowstone online backcountry permits is you can use your imagination to link a few sites together to make a last minute trip work. My wife was recovering from a knee replacement and had not been on the trail much last year. We were looking for a bit flatter route for a long...
