To Do in 2014

somehow most of my trips cannot be realized and I had to plan differently.
But it will still be a quite interesting year.

March: Spring break trip to Death Valley or Moab Area

May: Backpacking Grand Gulch

June: backpacking trip to Coyote Gulch with some extra time in Steven's Canyon

July: Uintas ( Four Lakes Basin, Ibantik Lake, Dead Horse Lake)
Colorado: Ice lake Basin, Blue Lakes
End of July: Alaska Basin

August: 10 Days Yellowstone, then Wind River Traverse

in between are a lot f days left for shorter trips and backpacks.

Back packed in the white clouds last summer. FYI if you go to frog Lake don't swim as there are leeches. The upper lakes are great though.

I might be doing the upper pallisides/waterfall Canyon trip to. Went to upper palisades last October and would love to spend more time there

They had the Winter Fest in Lava Hot Springs Last weekend. People dress in costumes and then float the river. They also have a race a race up main street in there swimsuits and flip flops. Here's a link...

Definitely let me know when you'll be in Colorado...if I'm free I'd love to join you on a backpack trip in the San Juans

It will be either the weekend of July 11/12 or the following one.
Maybe it's better to start a week later because of the wildflowers?
Whatever weekend works for you, it would be nice to have some company.
The area was on my bucket list for so many years, I definitely have to see it this summer.

Notified today that I pulled a Deso permit, but not until late in the season. Planning starts now!

Now hoping for good news on San Juan.

I would love to get in on this trip. I'm guessing that the weekends of the 18th or 25th would probably be a little better for wildflowers.

Are you going to yak it?

Probably WW boats with raft support. I'm going to have to see what my rental options are. I'm also debating have a commercial service handle the car shuttle.

my to do's for this year:
locally, to continue to expand my circumference of exploration further outward from Boulder - now reaching more of the Red Breaks/ Jackass Bench and First & Main (spencer canyon) area, the Circle Cliffs canyons, finally get into Death Hollow and more of the Sand Creek area.
also on the list is Deer Creek and Lower Boulder Creek & Brigham Tea Bench, Harris Wash/Egypt areas….
I'm sure there will be some surprise destinations mixed in.
One of these days I want to get back to my old stomping grounds at Arches and finally get into Clover and Lost Spring Canyons as well as explore downstream Courthouse Wash and the northern tributary canyons. unfortunately, those canyons do not fall under the areas allowed for backcountry permits - Also been wanting to head to the tip of the park above Big Bend from the Windows section just to do it.

you have such an incredible playground in your backyard.

~8 trips/year:
For 2014
  • Monongahela NF- Dolly Sods
  • AT Section Hike- Washington Monument-> Annapolis Rock, or Black Rock, or Pogo Memorial Campsite
  • Shenandoah NF- Old Rag Mountain Loop
  • Uintas Highline Trail- Leidy Peak->Mirror Lake
  • Great Smoky Mountains NF- Black Mountain Crest Trail: Commissary Ridge->Deep Gap
  • Gros Morne Canadian NP- Grand Traverse
  • Monongahela NF- Cranberry Wilderness
  • Allegheny NF- Some kind of loop
I REALLY HOPE THIS YEAR LOOKS LIKE THIS!!!

I've tagged along with friends on two Deso trips and both times we drove the vehicles from the put-in to the Green River take-out and paid a pilot to fly us back to the put in. Fun and scenic flight. I'd recommend that if it's cost effective and you can find some people in your group who are willing to make the drive. (You're probably already aware of this option...)

I head up to Big Bend with friends every couple of years. I can't recommend it enough. The Window Trail is great; I always seem to see bears on it. But, I particularly love hiking up to the South Rim, and around back through Boot Canyon, with a stop at Emory Peak.

I just checked the calendar on the BLM's website and it appears they have already notified successful applicants...I got no notification :(

I'll hold out hope another few days. Maybe they already ran the lottery, but that doesn't mean they've sent out the mailers yet...
