To Do in 2014

This is the waterfall. Picture doesn't do it justice. In high flows it would be pretty difficult /impossible to go up or down. But this was from May 2013 so idk how things have changed. image.jpg

Nope wasn't there when I went ....... where abouts is it.

About 1/2 between Poverty and Fat Mans Misery.

This is how it looked in May 2009 before the channel shifted:

My 2014 List ended up being quite a bit different than what I expected.

I'm glad I jumped at the chance for a spontaneous trip to Zion in March, because the rest of the year sure got cut short re: hiking plans. I loved my trip to the Moody Canyons, but it didn't yield as much terrain as I had hoped. Otherwise... my short August trip was more or less rained out and my big fall trip didn't happen at all. Oh well...

Bring on Spring 2015! :)

Had to go dig thru my Pic CD's ........... WOW, it was 2004 when I went thru there, I didn't think it was 14 years ago.......
I really need to go thru again I guess... Too many places to little time :moses:

Haha! Maybe it's just me and my bum knee, but I am on a planning spree right now! It's about all I can think about. I only wish I knew what I'll be capable of as the knee recovers so I could make more solid plans.

Too busy to even think that far ahead. Doing kitchen remodel now. In the middle of getting bids for new house in Island Park, ID ... starting construction Spring 2015. Between running that and contract wildland fire work, my hiking may be slim...or short ones, Art? I do have routes already for the Bighorn Crags, Sawtooths and the Mirror Plateau in Yellowstone...

So who has enough 2015 plans made to start next year's 'to-do' thread? @ashergrey?

Considering that I did almost nothing from my 2014 list, and considering that my last several outings have been busts, I'll leave it to someone else.

Ok- for the update with 3 weeks left:

My original list for 2014:
Cut out the forms and build the strongback for my cedar strip canoe- strongback is 100% done, forms are 100% done
Big Bend National Park- traded out for Carlsbad Caverns & Guadalupe Peak in March.
Kanarra Creek- put off for an undetermined future date
Saguaro National Park- done! Visited in February.
Grand Canyon- done! Visited in May.
White Sands National Monument- Done- visited in January.
Hike Miller Peak (ultraprominent)- Not happening.
Sit down with a calendar and plan things better- minor success, could see improvement.

Additions with date/timeframe:
fit in a short family backpacking trip (September?) Not happening
build a canoe paddle- Did it! Then made two more!
laminate the stems for my canoe- Not yet, but I might be able to fit it in
Cave of the Bells- nope, but did a cave resto trip instead elsewhere

Overall year evaluation: I accomplished 6 of the 12 items on the list outright, with another 2 that were substituted for something on the list, for an overall accomplishment rate of 75%. Not bad overall.

Here's how I did, copied and pasted from earlier with a bit of revisions...
  • Goblin Valley, Little Wild Horse, Wild Horse Windows - Check
  • Torrey - Sand Creek (GWT)- Check
  • Capitol Reef NP - Sulfer Creek- Check
  • Park City (Summit Park) to Provo, from my in-laws' door to my door- Check
  • Kings Peak (for my wife)...and will try to slip in Red Castle in the same trip, if we can - Nope (gave this up for PC to Provo)
  • Seven Peaks of Utah Valley day hikes (Timp, Lone Peak, Provo Peak, Cascade Mountain, Spanish Fork Peak, Mount Nebo, Santaquin Peak)...make it 8 peaks if I can go the extra mile...er an extra few...and bag Box Elder as well. - Nope (Failed to get up any. Would have gotten up a few of the shorter ones this fall, but I had a headache that persisted for 3+ months that had me riddled with anxiety from fears of a tumor, other serious problems, etc. and didn't dare go out solo or very far out. :( But it's much better now after some chiro work and physical therapy on my neck and working on better posture at work :))
  • An overnighter or two in Western Uintas - Check (Ruth Lake w/ the family)
  • Annual overnighter up Timp - Nope (Started up it on Labor Day only to have my headache scare me halfway up and turned around to come home)
  • Fall trip to Grand Gulch and/or Fish & Owl loop...or a return trip to Coyote Gulch - Nope (Headache, and even without it, work schedule probably wouldn't have allowed it)
  • Other local hikes/overnighters as weekends and other days off permit - Check (1 - Lake Hardy w/ @steve, @Mike K, & @WillisBodillus
