To Do in 2014

Timp is a must for everyone! This year thinking a point to point overnighter via timpanooke TH to aspen. When the sun sets and the crowds mellow, the mountain goats frolic in the meadows, and its also really cool watching them duke it out on a cliff line. See pic at http://backcountrypost.com/forum/attachments/picture-166-jpg.12030/

Or if you can't get a shuttle, starting and finishing from the Summit trailhead makes for a nice overnighter loop. Just adds a couple miles to each day.

I wish I could use the word "frolic" more. It's just one of those words I keep in my back pocket just waiting for the opportunity to use it. For me it's right up there with willy nilly and tussle. ;)

I meant to post to this thread earlier in the year, however, I always start out with too big of a list, then the realities of life always seem to whittle it down.

Already done:
  • Goblin Valley, Little Wild Horse, Wild Horse Windows
  • Torrey - Sand Creek (GWT)
  • Capitol Reef NP - Sulfer Creek
Upcoming trips inked onto the calendar:
  • Park City (Summit Park) to Provo, from my in-laws' door to my door
  • Kings Peak (for my wife)...and will try to slip in Red Castle in the same trip, if we can
Trips and hikes that I'm still working out calendar dates for:
  • Seven Peaks of Utah Valley day hikes (Timp, Lone Peak, Provo Peak, Cascade Mountain, Spanish Fork Peak, Mount Nebo, Santaquin Peak)...make it 8 peaks if I can go the extra mile...er an extra few...and bag Box Elder as well.
  • An overnighter or two in Western Uintas
  • Annual overnighter up Timp
  • Fall trip to Grand Gulch and/or Fish & Owl loop...or a return trip to Coyote Gulch
  • Other local hikes/overnighters as weekends and other days off permit
Among some I've had to drop from this year's list is a trip up into Alaska Basin and the Teton Crest. That will have to roll over to next year. I also want to get back to the Winds. Haven't been up there since I was a scout. In the mean time, I'll also be keeping an eye on any local Meet Ups & Invites for Fridays/Saturdays in June and for the week of July 21. I won't be competing for any Bag Night prizes, but I won't complain. :)

I wouldn't leave off Box Elder, I think its one of the better peaks in the valley, and you will have it to yourself most likely.

Oh I won't. I just don't understand why it's not among the "seven peaks" being the seven most prominent peaks of Utah county. In my mind, Box Elder should be in that list as well, thus making it "eight".

"...seven peaks ..."

Your plans sound like fun!

I'll be curious to see how you do on Cascade. I have a buddy who claims it's a nasty hike with lots of bush whacking. He way stymied 2 or 3 times before he finally made it. I've done it once with him via Upper Pole Couloir (snow) and he claims that's the only way to go.

And the "Sleigh Runner" (again, snow) is a good and fun route up Box Elder.

I've heard Cascade is pretty nasty as well. The best advice I had for doing it is to not.

Can I sub Box Elder for Cascade and still say I completed the "seven peaks"? After all, Provo Peak shares the same ridge as Cascade and is the high point of that ridge so it's not like I'd be cheating that ridge.

Haha...sounds good to me! =)

cool, thanks. I'm not really a peak bagger, so I'll probably just hike around it.

One hike I have wanted to do for several years now but have never gotten around to is Deseret Peak. I just can't seem to ever make it out there. Maybe I'll add that to my list for the year.

Funny...all this talk of peak bagging and Box Elder and my friend just barely told me that he and his friend are doing Box Elder (via Sleigh Runner) tomorrow (Saturday). I think I'll join them! Meeting at Tibble Fork at 7am if anyone's interested. =)

Deseret has been on my radar too.

I would, but I've got a family commitment up in Logan tomorrow.

I'm thinking Deseret would make a nice fall hike with the Aspen's over there. I have tentatively penciled it in for Late September.

Deseret is underrated IMO, beautiful area, little to no crowds and awesome views from the top. We went up there last weekend, didn't make it to the summit this time (probably a week to early w/ out mountaineering gear) but we enjoyed it none the less.
