Album Your favorites from 2017

Wow, there are already so many cool shots in this thread.

2017 was the year of the unexpected for me. Some of the big plans I had fell through, while opportunities I couldn't have dreamed of materialized.

My travels began in Bears Ears on January 1.

_MG_7291.jpg

_MG_7202.jpg

Then it was to Bend, Oregon to visit the High Desert Museum, where I had a photo in an exhibit. This captive Golden Eagle lives at the museum.

IMG_0846.jpg

During the spring I hit East Canyon, the Green River and Gates of Lodore while working on news stories about 2017's big snowmelt. @Smokey and I went through a legit swift water rescue course.

_MG_0044-Pano.jpg

_MG_8202.jpg

_MG_8098-HDR.jpg

Then in late spring, the huge blessing of a six-day adventure down the Yampa with @Nick and @Jen.

_MG_8904-HDR.jpg

_MG_9203.jpg

_MG_0434.jpg

The good runoff also meant @Artemus was able to help me achieve a major personal goal by floating the Chute of Muddy Creek.

_MG_8299.jpg

Somewhere in between I saw Devil's Tower for the first time.

_MG_8741.jpg

I made several trips to the Uintas over the course of the year, though none longer than an overnight. That included repeated searches for Melvin Heaps.

_MG_0079.jpg

_MG_1074.jpg

_MG_1055.jpg

Wildfire haze made the annual family trip to Flaming Gorge in August a bit interesting.

_MG_0420.jpg

My brother and I made a quick run to Cirque of the Towers in the Winds late in the season.

_MG_0939.jpg

I spotted this Bald Eagle on the way through Wyoming and thought its pose screamed 'Murica.

_MG_0704.jpg

And oh yeah, my brother, his wife and I also had an unexpected trip to Alaska.

_MG_9942.jpg

Though not outdoors related, I made trips to Seattle and Germany in October and December respectively. Both trips presented interesting challenges for photography.

_MG_0915.jpg

_MG_2533.jpg

In November, I spent a week kicking around the Arizona Strip, the Grand Canyon, Zion and Vermillion Cliffs. No trip report on this one just yet.

_MG_1701.jpg

_MG_1271.jpg

And I wrapped up 2017 with an impromptu run down to Arches to catch the pre-Christmas snow.

_MG_0080.jpg

Looking back, the only one of these trips I could have reasonably expected at the start of 2017 was the annual family vacation to Flaming Gorge. Almost everything else was a roll of the dice.

Bring on 2018.

Why it was my best of 2017:
Because this was the worst hike imaginable...Thousands of crickets most of the way, all over my legs (yes, I am scared of them). A skunk. A forgotten trail and two dried waterfalls, BUT, I did it. Oroville, CA.
Sunrise 2 WM.jpg

Because I had never hiked over 2000 ft elevation and this started over 9000 ft. Because I had been up for 36 hours. Because it hurt so bad. Leavitt Lake, CA.Leavitt Lake WM-5.jpg

Because it was my first backpacking experience. Strawberry, CA.
Cody Lake-7.jpg

Because it was the beginning of this passion. Because I needed to escape. Because the cliff gave way, but I managed to grab hold. Because I fell and landed on my head, and stood back up. Because it was the middle of summer, and it wasn't supposed to rain, but it did. Because I had a poncho, but I needed the rain more. Whiskeytown, CA.Whiskeytown Falls.jpg

It was a great year.

Not as prolific for sheer mileage and the longest trip was 3 days, But I did 5 of those and a week at a cabin in Fairview with the family besides.
Sunrise Pan- Cave Lake 7-20170707.jpg
On the shore of Clyde the five year old raised her wet, water wing arms over her head and spontaneously yelled: "I love backpacking!"

The Wedge 11-171008 Nik-sharpened.jpg
Great weather gave time for a couple of Thanksgiving nights on the Wedge, and this sunrise.

Capitol Reef-GSENM 20170526.jpg
A few nights in Capitol Reef and perhaps my favorite pic with 3 of the 4 the kids... sorry, previously shared in the B&W thread.

This was the weather the night before... some good cold, wet, snow.

July saw the annual 4th of July trip to Scofield and a few days at Bear Lake.
Scofield 7-20170001.jpg

Knee issues meant some small day hikes were on order in July and August. Including a full Saturday swinging in a hammock while the kids played around.
Twin Lakes 7-8-170075.jpg

The awe-inspiring total eclipse was worth all of the hype. I didn't really try for a picture, but somehow during those brief moments of the family cheering, taking in the surrounding light, and watching the light snake across the ground, I did shoot a quick one.

Wow, it's fun to look at everyone's adventures!

I had a lot of great trips last year. I got to check out the Maine coast for the first time ever, this was at Acadia National Park which was delightfully un-busy while we were there.
DSC_8782.JPG

This was on the Brown Duck Mountain loop in the southern Uintas with my sister. It was a great trip! I had read a lot of poor reviews of this trail, but I think the trick is to get out there early in the season while it's all green, the lakes are full, and there aren't any cows yet.
DSC_9180.JPG

This is Alice Lake in the Idaho Sawtooth range. Some amazing country up there! My husband and I backpacked the Alice - Toxaway Lake loop with a couple of friends and had an awesome trip.
DSC_9594.JPG

Here's one a little closer to home. We decided to tackle the Ruby Dome, the highest point in Elko County, Nevada. We turned it into a multi day trip, but it was still a pretty grueling hike in my opinion. I am not a peak bagger, but it was pretty awesome to climb to the top of a mountain I see every day.
DSC_9806.JPG
My sister and I had plans for another backpacking trip in the Uintas in September. And then the weather decided it was going to snow... a lot that weekend. So I scrambled to find us another place to go and managed to secure a backcountry site in Canyonlands. It was a totally different trip than what we originally planned but it was incredible (and so much warmer).
DSC_9845.JPG
Early last winter we headed to Colorado to visit family. We went cross country skiing at Devil's Thumb. It was only the second time my husband cross country skied and he did well enough that he would like to go again! I call that a win.

Dave, was the brain rocks shot taken at white pocket. Or somewhere in the vermillion cliffs wilderness?

Dave, I love the photo of the white brainrocks. It doesn't look exactly like Whitepocket to me, but you say its on the Vermillion Cliffs. I've been to a few of these type areas there but this doesn't seem familiar. I wondered if you minded me asking whereabouts there it was?

I'm pretty late in posting my best images here, but here they are.
2017 was an interesting year: I did quite a few road trips in the Desert Southwest before moving for good to the Big Island of Hawai'i
