It's more about the abrasive surface, it kills all gear pretty fast. I have to replace my shoes every month.
The surface is made of razor sharp silica glass. Wears out everything. If you trip and fall you have a big problem as well.
Tourists that go without the safety of a guided tour have fallen and the cuts went all the way down to the bones. Life flights are very common here
 
and then I'm in action out in the field at work :)
Working as a lava tour guide also involves a lot of play time, of course.

we used to wear black shirts, but then the helicopters were complaining they couldn't see us. It was just a cheap excuse for them to fly below the flight limit regulated by FAA. But I like the bright shirts anyway, at least everyone can see me when I'm running across the lava field :) Or I can see my backup guide or lead guide, depending what position you have on a certain day
