Backcountry Vehicles

Knight is probably too heavy.

Just fine, lot's of ski area trips, snowpack roads to Island Park. I have an 02, of course I put 2" body lift and a little larger tires on it, pretty mild as it is what the wife drives. Have had it on a lot of Moab Class 4/5 trails as well. Just like any short wheelbase you need to get used to it. I'd buy another, the gas mileage and power is way better. Pic (also my Frontier) back on about page 5 or 6.

More new Taco stuff. Apparently they partnered with GoPro to give it integrated GoPro mount(s). Kind of funny, but I guess it really could come in handy for a lot of folks.

How well do the xterras handle in snow?
Mine does pretty well. It's a Pro4X and I never had to lock the rear diff. The biggest thing is I've always kept heavy duty tires on it so I can watch while other guys change blowouts.

Updated photos since I've added some new bumpers and lights recently...

Looks nice Randy. I put a Warn bumper on the front and a RSE on the back of our JK. The Warn has been perfect, the RSE not so much. Still thinking about building a canoe rack of some type. Maybe come off the sliders in front and just the bumper at the rear.

A mostly stock Jeep Wrangler TJ gets me wherever I want to go.

Anyone have any experience with the "no driver input" automatic 4WD in the newer (well, newer than mine) Jeeps? I'm looking for an 08/09 Grand Cherokees to replace my 04 and was surprised when the first one I tested had no 4WD lever, just a traction control button. I like them overall, other than the reduction in cargo space from my WJ, just wondering how well that 4WD works for very light off road use.

I like the control of the old school hubs......hate the auto hubs on the Nissan and the electronic auto engage on the Silverado.....they make you always wonder.

It's called "smart" 4x4. Basically designed for soccer mom's. (no offense intended) the system works with the abs and doesn't engage the front wheels until it detects slip in the rear wheels. Good for slick roads, not for off roading. I don't personally own one, I am just familiar with the system.

That's how a lot of the manufacturers ages making them now, more user friendly.

No offense taken, I keep saying they've really mom-mobiled the new Jeeps. Bummer that they did that to the GCs! I've been testing the GCs, Liberty and XTerra. The XTerras all have rust and trashed plastic in the interior, the Liberty is too small, the Grand Cherokee has been the leader so far.
