    Exploring Southern Utah

I am in the final stages of putting together a trip I plan on taking this April that will (most likely) run into the first week of May. After perusing through all the amazing trip reports on here I have more ideas than I know what to do with! So I was hoping to get some feedback from some of you...

January Jaunt into Joshua Tree NP

This was a three day camping trip to Joshua Tree National Park from January 9th - 11th, 2017. My younger brother is planning on joining my girlfriend and I on some of our camping and backpacking trips this spring/summer and with such little camping experience I thought it would be good to ease...

    What did you buy today?

@wsp_scott I am in the market for a lighter and smaller tripod. The specs for the silk Mini look great and I would be interested to hear about your experiences with the new buy. Maybe a gear review is in order :)

First Snowshoe Experience - Bi-centennial trail, North Fork Park

I like your choice of trekking poles. I have a pair as well and they haven't failed me yet!

    Bears Ears National Monument

This is a great use of presidential decree! Does anyone want to speculate on how this might affect public access? In terms of regulations regarding dispersed camping and hiking. I read the "fact sheet" published by the Department of the Interior but it was very vague regarding how/if regulations...

    Klymit stuff

I have the insulated Static V which is just the pad @slc_dan mentioned but with a higher R-value. I have about 40-50 nights on it and honestly I have no complaints about it. Yeah Its a bit heavier and not as small as some of the "top-of-the-line" pads but for $65, I am very happy with my purchase.

    Joshua Tree National Park

If you buy a map of the park you will see an area entitled "Wonderland of Rocks" area about a 4 mile hike from the Keys West TH. This area has a lot of interesting rock formations and down the main wash you can find a oasis called Willow Hole. Lots of rock climbers out here too. If the park is...

    Anza-Borrego Desert Part - 2

Continuation of part - 1 DAY 3 After enjoying the early morning howls of the coyote in the wash we got up and set out for the south end of the park. The goal was to reach a place called "Indian Hill". Now we had read online that the outcropping marked Indian Hill on the Tom Harrison map was not...

Thanks for the advice everyone, I really appreciate it! The success you have with the cheap, light stuff is music to my ears and wallet haha

    Fishing Gear for Backpacking

I've been wanting to incorporate fishing gear into my camping/backpacking outfit for awhile now. But I am a beginner to trout fishing (mostly saltwater experience) and not sure where to start. Ideally, I would like to have something that I can take backpacking as well as use when camping in the...

    Anza-Borrego Desert Part - 1

@MikeM, another nice about Anza is that you can camp anywhere. Just pull off any wash and set up in a clearing. Joshua Tree seems to be the typical NP where you are piled on top of other campers with hardly any privacy. With that being said we also want to spend some more time in Joshua Tree, it...

    Anza-Borrego Desert Part - 1

Before starting on this thread I have to make one thing clear; my girlfriend (Gen) is, and always will be, a desert rat. This is not a bad thing of course, its just that she has spend almost every spring in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park since she was a year old. Her parents have spent the last...

Early Season Backpacking Trip into the Uintas

Yes the lack of mosquitoes would be a plus! Thanks for the input @Nick, I will probably try to plan a trip and then play it by ear as the weather reports roll in.

Early Season Backpacking Trip into the Uintas

Hey Everyone, I am planning a trip next year and want to complete a backpacking trip in the Uintas (all your wonderful trail reports have inspired me and put it squarely on my map). The only problem is that it kinda has to be in the first half of June.... So before I start to dive into...

Now entering the ring... (sleeping pads)

I have the Klymit static V insulated sleeping pad and my girlfriend has the REI Flash sleeping pad. Being on a college student budget, I was able to get the Klymit pad for $65 on amazon. This was the main reason I went for this pad. Its a bit heavy at 25 oz but has a good R-value at 4.4. The...

Starting to build my own Bivy

@Mike Jones this is a great idea, might have to draw up some plans for a similar project. I also taught myself how to sew this year so if you have any questions regarding sewing feel free to ask! Stuff doesn't turn out that pretty at first but its functional haha

    Backpacking meals

For future trips I think you would be ok with re-packaging the canned chicken as long as you did it right before your trip. Right before canning the contents, the food is relatively sterile from the cooking process. Once the food is canned it is in an anaerobic environment (no oxygen) and...
