Album Weather, Storms and Clouds

It's been a fun challenge going through all my pics, trying to find one good enough to post. The photography on this site is incredible. Y'all are a talented bunch.

Friday night was a real treat around Price. There was first an amazing sunset with beautiful mammatus clouds, then an intense lightning storm that never quite came far enough north to hit town but was easily (and safely) viewable from the hills overlooking the city.

Thanks. :) Nah, I just cropped out the uninteresting bits of sky on the lightning photos.

I finally got too jealous of all the awesome lightning photos everyone seems to have in their arsenal and so when an electrical storm passed by a couple of weeks a go I went out and clicked off a few shots. I have about 50 where the clouds are lit up and the lightning is just off camera. However, I did land one or two.

I've never seriously attempted to capture lightning shots before but sitting on the front porch last night there was a good show so I grabbed the camera. I was playing with the exposure/f stop/zoom etc when just by chance I caught this one - didn't get another good shot in the next hour before the mozzies drove me indoors (mosquitos in Cedar City - it's been a wet summer!)

It didn't photograph very well, but this was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen in the backcountry. On the 4th day of our week-long trip, we made it into this lake near the continental divide just as a huge storm rolled in. We dived into tents for a bit and when the precipitation stopped we were greeted with this site. Cotton candy clouds topping the entire spine of the divide. It was spilling over the top of the 13k+ foot peaks and crashing down the faces as it dissipated into nothing. It was still blustery and cold out but we couldn't take our eyes off of it. It was outstanding...

Lightning no moon 2.jpg

Another one from the lightning storm at the Grand Canyon. This was taken at around 3:30 a.m. when there was no moon, so the only light is from the lightning. This was taken from Point Imperial looking at the plateau. At first I didn't like this one, but now I like how the lightning and wind/rain is the only feature.

...niceee!
