We had been talking about getting a dog for the last year and finally got pretty serious about looking a few months ago. After a few weeks of looking we found the exact breed we were looking for and she ended up only being only a few blocks away.

Meet our Australian Shepard / Border Collie mix, Moki.

Hey folks: What type of backpack do you recommend for dogs. Our pup, a Wheaten Terrier has more energy than he knows what to do with. I will be going backpacking in W. Va this month and figured time to teach him to haul his stuff. He is a medium sized dog, 40lbs??
Thanks

@Bill: Aussies are my favorite breed, loyal and smart with tons of energy. Still miss our last one. Our Wheaten, while fun and energetic has a mind of his own. The Aussie always loved to please us.

I've tried quite a few over the years and I have loved the Mountain Smith Dog Pack. You'd probably want a small or medium for a dog that size. I use the medium on my pups that are 75-95 lbs. I believe @Udink is using the same pack.

Yep, I use a Mountain Smith medium on my 40-lb dog. Although I'm considering a different pack now--I saw a dog wearing one last year in the Uintas that was tapered toward the front and back instead of rectangular like the Mountain Smith, and it seems like that would catch less frequently when bushwhacking (which I tend to do a lot of).

I've had packs with the more tapered design and I had a harder time keeping them balanced. Not sure if that was directly a result of the tapered design or not though.

I haven't posted a pic in here for a while. Here's a shot of my pups and their best bud Sonny. Teak the doberman on the left, then Patina half dobie, half pit and Nikita half Akita half... and Sonny was half lab pit clown. Sonny passed away earlier this year. :( They were hiding in the shade of my Taco all the way out at the end of Hole in the Rock Road.

I got the Mnt. Smith Dogpack. Awaiting shipment. It has been 5 days and no shipping info??? I want to break it in this wknd. I got the small, wife says no way. I think she is wrong as our dogs chest is 23" and the pack is good to 30". We'll see.

My dog loves to get wet and MUDDY. He literally dives head first into mud puddles. I'm thinking the packs are not waterproof. I guess a ziplock baggie is needed.

@baltocharlie - Definitely not waterproof. I usually do a big gallon bag in each side and then the meals inside of that. A couple layers of protection, especially if your pup likes to plop down in the water a lot. I think you'll be good on side. My 100 lb doberman with her massive chest fits great in a medium.

STP has been a little slow to ship to me in the past but never more than a couple days. Might want to give 'em a nudge.

Pack arrived, fit perfect!! Jack(the dog) hated it. When I put it on him he just laid in the grass and wouldn't run around. Tried to get him to play but he just sat there. I took it off of him and he ran around like he was just released from prison. He's going to be surprised this weekend when we go backpacking and he's toting his grub. At least he better carry it. I'll take him on a test hike tomorrow.

Jack did fair with the pack today, wouldn't run at all though. Tomorrow we take it out for real. His first BP trip.
