Album The dogs of backcountrypost.com

I'm not a dog owner but I love dogs and love seeing them on the trail and in the back country. 95% are friendly. Some maybe too friendly. I had to post this shot of some guy's dog on Provo Peak. The owner actually snapped this photo. Intentional? =)

I've had several dogs over the years and loved them all. Currently my 8 year old malamute Nuka is solo - that is if you don't count my 20lb siamese cat Hank that considers himself very much a dog.

He's getting a bit slower now - bad knees tend to make his hikes much shorter than they were when he was a tough little puppy.

He's never been quite the same since his older brother Iluq, a mal/wolf hybrid left to chase sheep in the sky 5 years or so ago..still the best hiking buddies I've had the pleasure of spending a day with.

Clint - I swear I've asked you this before, but how does Nuka do in hot, dry desert hiking? And how is the shedding issue around the house? Such a beautiful pup...

He does okay - but not great as you can imagine. hot thick coat impedes that a bit. Shedding isn't that bad - previously owning a newfie made me grateful for the amount he sheds. usually blows his coat once or twice a year, and for a couple of weeks it's pretty rough. The biggest challenges to hiking - which I'm sure you've encountered with your big dogs is obstacles with no good bypass - stuff like ding and dang canyons are pretty much a no go for him. when he was younger and more spry he could climb most anything - now that he's older, fatter, and less agile - not so much.

Ahh.. dogs crossing logs!

Some silly humans crossing the same creek, thinking they're smart. Nikita wasn't having any of it...

I have to bring this thread back to the top.
Here is Rocky in the snow. He does not like the cold stuff very much.

So I bought him a jacket to help but he still doesn't like it. He wouldn't even look at me while I was trying to get his picture.

Just joined today, happy to see this is such a dog friendly forum! I'll probably have questions for those with 4 legged kids for our upcoming trip to southern Utah. Great looking dogs everybody!

Here is Delta. My 5 years old Sheltie. We have hiked the Bruce Trail ( 550 Miles) together and passed more than 1000 lakes over the years in my Inflatable Kayak. He is 20 pounds and runs five miles every day following my bike off leash.
