Low clouds, light snow and calm winds over the course of several days presented an opportunity for a frozen finger photography walk on the morning of January 29, as the sun came out in the aspen groves at the top of Nose Hill.

It has been a solemn week in the snowy mountains of America, coast to coast. We played it quite conservative yesterday and quelled any thoughts of bigger or steeper terrain on this day.

We loved our first winter trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes along Lake Michigan!

Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive


Lake Michigan Overlook (stop #9 along Pierce Stocking) - no going down to the bottom of the 452' dune this time!




Beach behind D.H. Day Campground (accessed while skiing Heritage Trail) - Pyramid Point way off in the distance


Brrr - the wind was fierce! Great snow drifts, though.

12/21/20 - Took these on a quick winter solstice jaunt up Four Mile Trail in Yosemite. With an alpine start, I made it out of the Bay Area, up the trail, and back home in time for dinner. The trail was all but deserted which is unheard of these days in Yosemite (and which was a total delight).

Took my youngest to frolic in the foothills on Saturday. A nice squall squashed the sunshine, but it was nice to have some real snow the past week or so.

That pesky border! Seems like no hope for a mid-late April desert trip for us. Fingers crossed for October. In fact, we would love to spend 2-3 months of winter in the desert sometime. The grass is always greener...

That reminds me so much of my friend's neighbors field in Dummerston, VT around Christmas Time. Sadly could not get a holiday visit in 2020 because of the plague. Thanks @kwc, brings back fond memories.
