Bag Night Challenge 2018

Let's see, for January I got 20 bag nights after a 20 day backpacking trip into the mountains of NC and TN---

My trip started in a cold rainstorm which turned to snow at 10F. In fact the whole trip was butt cold.

I only see 3 backpackers during the trip and all of them are BMT thruhikers. This is Greenleaf and Apple Pie.

One of my favorite trip shots on 7 Mile Ridge. I'm using a McHale Demo pack and it works pretty good for the whole trip.

My coldest morning is on Little Santeetlah Creek at 0F or -2F. Glad I brought my microspikes.

I rarely hike in so much clothing so you know it was cold.

Awesome!! The southern Appalachians are no joke at this time of year. Would love to hear more about your route etc. Trip report maybe?

Well the goal is to spend more nights outside thus year than inside, so...

I do tend to agree though. A big part of the whole Bag Night thing is still getting out and after it despite living a "normal" life.

Same principle applies on a more micro scale. The parent who gets 20 bag nights, many of those with the kids in tow, is just as impressive to me as the 25 year old single guy who gets 70.

If you sleep out in the backyard every night you'll have about 365 bag nights per year. Pretty good numbers.

I hope you reach your goal.
I thought about setting the same goal for myself this year and then decided that I would be pissed at myself if the streak got broken in Nov or Dec So instead I have a set a goal of at least one hike (not necessarily overnight) each week.

I have had a case of the canyoneering bug lately so last weekend i went to North Wash and did Middle Fork of Leprechaun and Monkey Business, and this weekend i went with a group of people and did all 4 Hog Canyons on saturday and Shenanigans on Sunday. Shenanigans was my favorite by far! It was extremely narrow and "the grim crawl" turned out to be a lot of fun.

1/2 - 1/4 North Wash
1/9 - 1/11 North Wash

Seriously. It was a fantastic time to be out there. Had the whole gorge to ourselves and didn't have to cross the icy river.
