In and Out - Boulder Mail Trail to DH

While the ivy strikes fear in me, it does look beautiful. Thanks!

    Wind River 2

I love that "still I cried" part. We always forget the hard part and remember all the experiences, don't we? Thanks!

    Right Fork-Zion NP

No we don't leave the ropes. We do leave the webbing in a bolted canyon, which this is. You pull the ropes after the rappel and continue downcanyon. Old webbing which is no longer usable is removed and packed out.

    Right Fork-Zion NP

I have hiked the day hike in Right Fork off the Kolob Terrace Road from the bottom up to Barrier Falls several times. It's a long way to the payoff, but once you're there it's an amazing place. It comes complete with poison ivy, beavers and biting deer flies in the summer but it also lacks the...

    Tuckup to Stairway -Grand Canyon

We went for 6 nights. Seemed pretty good at that. If you had extra time you could hike the Dome trail on the Esplanade too.

    Tuckup to Stairway -Grand Canyon

Back in March, I was invited on a trip down Tuckup Canyon to Stairway Canyon. Non technical but a rope and webbing was helpful for backpacks and a few downclimbs. Heading down the trailhead into Tuckup Cubicle rock, an important route marker for the way back out. A stop at the Shaman's...

11 days of canyons in the Zion-Page region (part 1)

So the boulder jam is gone? A few years back we came down from Mt Carmel and we took the bypass for the falls. It turned out to be more work then it was worth. Do you have a picture by chance?

    Lady Mountain-Zion NP

There was a couple who were climbers and a small group who were locals which were coming down. I have a hard time imagining what it would be like as an official trail. It definitely has some major penalty points. We really do spend most of our hiking time in Zion off on our own. The best...

    Lady Mountain-Zion NP

This was back in the beginning of November. A group led by my son was going up Lady Mountain. Lady for those of you who don't know it is an old park trail which was abandoned due to numerous accidents. They took down the ladders and chains and now it includes two short sections where one of...

    Dark Canyon-Woodenshoe to Sundance

Just last week. We went up a way into Cherry for better water. It honestly wasn't much different. Hanging garden had great water. Young's was clear but with a bit of sulfur smell. After that we had plenty but silty. The platypus did a great job with lots of back flushing. Letting the...

    Dark Canyon-Woodenshoe to Sundance

I was lucky enough to be invited along on a Dark Canyon trip. Located in the Bears Ears area of Utah, its' remoteness was more than my route finding skills were comfortable with. A group of four, we set off from Woodenshoe trailhead. This section was more gradual downhill with wooded areas...

Southern Utah - Suggestions for 3-4 day backpack in October

The Paria or parunaweep from the top. We just hiked Pine Valley Mts Pinto Springs to Brown's. There's good water at Mill Flats and Whipple Valley. Lots of cows before then.

    Revisiting South Thunder Mountain

And thanks for putting in the flowers too. I've seen the Parry's Primrose in Great Basin on up on Pine Valley Mts and never knew what it was.

Water Canyon to White Wave (help & invite)

Don't think so. I've gotten ledged out up there before and personally wouldn't try it. If you do, please take care.

Water Canyon to White Wave (help & invite)

Glad you enjoyed it! The road is now really good. They fixed it up after the flooding. There's wooden fencing at the parking areas so you can find the squirrel parking area easily. It's on the right, before the water canyon parking. It takes longer going up Squirrel, I'd say 11-12 hours but...

Zion NP-Kolob Arch, Beartrap Falls, and Willis Creek

Here's as close I got to Chasm. I was whipped after the hill. I was also hiking solo so wasn't taking Beartrap canyon (technical route) back so it seemed like it wasn't happening. The first picture is the last of the hill, started out with dirt and pine needles then last was scree. Oh and...

Zion NP-Kolob Arch, Beartrap Falls, and Willis Creek

Last year I tried making it to Chasm Lake. My son said to mention to the Rangers that you're going so they know someone is back there. I had 2 nights at campsite 11. Before I knew it 3 Rangers were there, wanted to see my permit which I had gotten online. I promised them I wouldn't go if it...
