Back to Kaʻaha Point in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes NP but with a different trail combination.
It was hot as hell, no shade but the bonus was the private cove and beach I had to myself.
The water catchment at the shelter was empty, so I had to carry all my water with me

hiking down Hilina Pali - 1400 ft down in a mile, and you have to go up again at the end when youʻre tired, lol. My destination was the surf along the shoreline

Hilina Pali - steep and lots of loose lava rocks to go down

walking%20down%20the%20lava%20trail-XL.jpg

trail of loose lava rocks and rubble: no joke when the sole of your trail runners is completely blank and youʻre slipping and sliding like on ice

overgrown%20trail%20selfie-XL.jpg

the trail was a bit overgrown and route-finding skills were a big plus, lol

swim%20cove%20copy-XL.jpg

my private protected cove was perfect for a swim - no one else around on a Saturday is always a plus

Fun hike with 10.5 miles across old lava and 2300 ft elevation gain , mostly on the last 2 miles

Did you get your kilt stuck on a tree limb? Are you still up there? I wondered why you didn't post a what's cooking post...

And wait til the area moose hear about this. (I'd try to be real quiet tonight.)

Hang tight :) Me and @Bob will be up there sometime in the next few days.

No, I'm back in Salt Lake. I did a hike yesterday that wore me out. I'm trying to keep up with @TractorDoc's training regime you know. Like that is possible. :)

I've got to finish staining the outside of my upper deck today, so I'll try and get a report up later today. I'll attach the "What's Cooking" part to it, plus answer all the replies that I am behind on. Not enough time in the day Skipper.

Don't let Bob nap in the lupines, or it might be a week till you get to me. :D

If I had run into a moose yesterday, I would have just laid down on the trail and let it stomp me to death. :scatman:

I added an extra five pounds to my pack today in case you were keeping track.

You know he cheats, don't you? He has a special fuel his wife makes up for him - circus peanuts, microgreens, and steam train cinders.
Steam train cinders! I knew I was missing something. :)

Everyone should have some sort of roughage in their diet. I made the switch from broccoli a number of years ago and have not looked back. :p

Last weekend's hike was low on pictures due to a lack of preparation on my part (low batteries and forgotten SD Cards). Mrs. TD and I tackled 10 miles of the towpath trail -- we started in inclement weather but it cleared up and the sun popped out later in the day.

Picture of us at the trailhead with the GoPro. If you think my stomach looks a little lumpy you'd be correct -- my DSLR is all zipped up in there.

There were turtles this time, but much to @scatman's dismay they were not snappers. I believe I spotted a group of Spiny Softshell Turtles in the river.

Jump to today and I returned to Mohican State Park as I believe the terrain here will help me get thru what @scatman has planned come August.

Mrs. TD and I walked a similar path as found in the report I posted for July 4th. We walked a couple extra miles and found a little less water flowing from the waterfalls. On the plus side there were a lot less children around Big Lyons Falls so I had this picture taken for scale.

There was a nice butterfly at the trailhead too.

We planned to stop at a nice local eatery to post savory food pictures like my trip report mentor does, but instead we had to return home to meet a roof inspector to evaluate any damage we received in one of last month's storms. Maybe next time. . .

Picture of some hail from the storm.

So you are up to 55 lbs.?

No snappers this time?
The bathroom scale method showed the pack at 50lbs., but that was without the camera and water. I started out with two two-liters (2.2lbs each), add in the camera at around 3+lbs., plus the wife's vegan jerky and my last Chocolonely bar (I would not have made it up the hill without it) and I'd safely say I averaged 55lbs.

No love for the Spiny Softshell Turtles?

If it is snappers you want you should stop by my house as the pond has several big ones in it.

Impressive on the weight and the snappers. How'd they get into the pond?

50lbs?! ......... you are following a creek ...... dont carry 2 liters, 1 would suffice.
Want me to check your pack and throw things out? or Dreamer could do it....

They wandered in from someone else's pond I imagine. There have been some big ones here for years. I will try to get a picture or two for you.

Don't worry Bob, I don't plan on carrying 50lbs. . . but if I carry 50lbs. now it should make a lesser weight easier to carry later. ;)

Also, you never know when sneaky Scott or Hugh will try hiding a rock in one's pack. Never hurts to have some reserve carrying capacity, just in case.

I will no doubt still have things you would toss out. Perhaps if you joined us at the beginning of our journey you could teach me a thing or two. :)

Most often I tend to bring more food than I will need. Just think of all the Moon Cheese and Circus Peanuts I'll be able to share with you at Hidden Creek!

:thumbsup::thumbsup: on the snapper shots.

A rendezvous at Hidden Creek! Make sure you bring your Hawken rifle - .50 caliber.
