Album The dogs of backcountrypost.com

Thanks everyone for your kind words. Am doing much better today. She had a lot of dingo in her and it was kind of like having a wild coyote part of the time. :)

I still have two good dogs, so we'll carry on and have more adventures in her honor.

I recently took Loa for the longest hike she's done so far, just over eight miles and with a temp of 88 degrees when we finished. Near the end she was about done. Whenever I'd stop to take a photo she'd just lie down in the middle of the trail, so I worked my way down to the creek to let her cool off.

We lost our 15 year hiking/backpacking companion Freckles early Thursday morning. It wasn't unexpected as her condition deteriorated very rapidly Wednesday. She took her first breath and last in the very same spot 15 years, seven months, and 12 days apart. Going to miss her but the last year has been a little rough for all. She was a great companion and liked to stay close. I'm guessing over those 15 plus years we logged better than 15k miles together hiking and backpacking. She never spent a day in a kennel.

She is the top pup.

Backpacking right up until the end. She lived a wonderful life!

In case everyone isn't crying enough already, this is Mason, age 12. We had to say goodbye to him as well on Thursday, with a quick decline starting Wednesday. He was my oversized lap dog and my shadow.

His last picture from Tuesday:

His first picture with us, August 2009:

His brother Dixon seems to be doing ok for the most part, but he's been balking at leaving for walks alone. They're littermates, they spent most of their time politely ignoring each other, but they were seldom separated. This was as outdoorsy as they enjoyed:

My condolences. Saying that final goodbye doesn't get any easier with practice but it's the price we have to pay for some genuine unconditional love and companionship.
