Album The dogs of backcountrypost.com

Hi Charlie, what breed are you? Do you know? Sounds like you are a valuable companion.
Charlie's a rescue with a slightly shady past, so I'm not sure about his lineage. He's definitely part Aussie, and he's got the slightly asymmetrical eyes that can be characteristic of Aussies. (Along with an asymmetrical brain!) His coat has the waviness and feel of a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, but I don't know about that.

He's really turned into a great off-leash backcountry dog ... he quietly alerts me to bears in a way I really appreciate, and has learned not to chase anything larger than a squirrel. If I could only get him to carry a pack ...

Ha!

Charlie's former owner was a very well-known advocate for marijuana legalization in Montana. The guy had six dogs, and they didn't really get any attention at all ... and one day the dogs all broke out of the yard and one of the neighborhood cats turned up dead. Charlie and his brother took the heat for that, and they ended up at the shelter -- though the shelter staff swore Charlie was framed.

It was a huge project to socialize him, but totally worth it. We've been a team for six years now, and he hasn't shown the slightest interest in eating any cats at all. :)

This is intriguing. So who does the shelter theorize planted the dead cat? Good on you for rescuing btw.

Rescue dogs are the only ones to get.

According to the shelter people, Charlie was the Omega dog of that little dog pack, at the very bottom of its pecking order ... he'd never interacted with anyone but those other dogs, and just took all of his life cues from what the pack did. And packs do lots of things that dogs would never do individually.

When I saw him at the shelter he was the most terrified creature I'd ever seen. It literally took months before I could put him in a social situation with other dogs or most other people without him fleeing in a panic. He's come a long ways, though, and how he's the butt-snifing king of the dog park.
