Album Snow and Winter Shots

This was the entrance gate to the Santanoni Great Camp near Newcomb, NY. This Adirondack great camp was built by Robert Pruyn in the 19th century. The estate covered 13,000 acres and was pretty much self sustaining with its own farm, etc. In the 1950s it was sold to the Melvin family. In 1971 one of the Melvin grandchildren went missing in the surrounding forest and was never found. The family no longer wished to use the great camp, selling it to an Adirondack nonprofit who in turn sold it to New York State. The camp buildings are being slowly restored by a nonprofit group. The main building is pretty cool to see, and when seen from the air, is shaped like a Phoenix.

I loved skiing Bighorn Pass trail in Yellowstone the last few days.
Luckily, someone else broke trail the first 3 miles and I didn't have to do the hard work. I went a big beyond and it was tough, also a lot of weak snow layers that gave way. Glod I didn't go into any of the higher areas.

Love it! How deep was the snow? And how about that snowstorm on Saturday? My drive home from West Yellowstone was sketchy.

I'm considering that trail for my next outing this weekend. Also considering Specimen Creek, Bacon Rind Creek, and Teepee Pass. Too many good options in that area.

drove past Bacon Rind yesterday and no one has skied it yet. You need to break trail. The snow is deeper than last year, deep and fluffy.
When the snowstorm hit I just went and skied in West Yellowstone. I didn't want to drive out far that day. I'll do Fawn Pass trail maybe tomorrow. Never done Specimen before, so I don't know how steep it gets. Most of the trails I ski I have hiked in the summer. I need to look at Teepee Pass, I haven't done that yet either.
And I hear you!! I'm already running out of days again. So much to do

I kind of like breaking trail because I like to see the untouched snow, so maybe I'll try heading there! Haha. My skis are 98mm in the shovel, so they should hopefully be able to give me a bit more flotation in the powder.

Looking forward to seeing what other places you get out and ski!

98mm is what I dream about to be my next pair of backcountry ski. I only have the 68mm and breaking trail is often a lot off work.
I'm still considering Fawn Pass for a bit and also Daly Creek to the Patrol Cabin. Must be nice to see it in the snow. Daly Creek TH has less snow than other places. I stopped shortly yesterday. I might eventually just snowshoe to the Patrol Cabin

for the last trip of the year I went to Daily Creek and then from there to Black Butte trail and the Daly Creek Patrol Cabin.
The trailhead is in the snow shadow, so less snow at the beginning and the trail winds through sagebrush for a while. Even though there was less snow than in other areas I've been, the elevation gain kicked my butt a bit breaking trail, and my knee injury from end of September still made it hard for me to snowshoe.

Bonus was the love song of a lone wolf on the way back looking for a mate

New Year’s Day hike with some family this morning into Auger Falls. Not much snow but the river was really flowing!

We did see an otter on the other side of the river near the flat water but he/she was too quick to get a photo before he/she ducked into the rocks. It was a nice day to get outside for a while.
