I believe these are fir trees that are yellow. Redhorn Peak to the right in the background.

We are heading to southern Utah this weekend, any suggestions for fall colors? Looks like Boulder Mountain will be past park then, so maybe something around Capitol Reef or the swell? Thanks!

Well, the north rim of the grand canyon was probably a day or two past perfection this past weekend, hope that helps a bit in triangulating where pretty colors will be

Last weekend I did this drive:

Salt Lake > Cedar City > Cedar Canyon > Cedar Breaks > Panguitch > Red Canyon > Bryce Canyon > Escalante > Boulder > Burr Trail > Wolverine Loop > Notom Road > Capitol Reef > Torrey, Loa, Sigurd, Scipio, etc. back to SLC

The Cottonwoods around Capitol Reef were in full yellow glory in some places, particularly in the more open areas. Deep in the canyon it was mostly green, but by this weekend there will be enough yellow to probably call it peak or close to it.

There was nice color on The Burr Trail as well. It should be peak this weekend.

Cedar Canyon was gorgeous but getting close to passing peak.

If you look at the last post on the previous page, I took some pictures in the Swell near Buckhorn Wash. I'd bet the cottonwoods over there will be nice and yellow.

I also will be south next weekend, so hoping for some color still hanging on to go with the cottonwoods...
Until then, I love fall, so I will take what I can get.

These were the first weekend in October, no direct sun, but got there before the wind did:

Got to spend a week in the Eastern Sierra this year. The drought has really hurt California and the colors weren't as vivid as in past years, but still, it's the Eastern Sierra. Just being there is enough.

Sunrise from my campsite at Convict Lake. Yes, I actually camped. Once. Barely slept-I'm getting too old to sleep on the ground, unfortunately.

McGee Creek never disappoints. I hiked several miles through the canyon and discovered all kinds of spots I want to return to. Next year....

It was also fishing season in the Eastern Sierra

I hiked the loop around Convict Lake, trying to beat the fisherman before they started wading into the reflections.

Got there with 5 minutes to shoot before a bunch of guys waded into this scene:

I stayed in Bishop for most of my trip. It's one of my favorite towns, low key, friendly, and great places to eat. And amazing scenery everywhere. I woke up to shoot the sunrise, but it didn't look like much so I headed for the mountains. As I climbed out of the Owens Valley this amazing light started to hit Mt. Tom just to my left. I spun a U-turn right in the middle of the highway, drove across one of those throughways and shot from the side of the road:

Towards the end of the week a snowstorm with high winds blew in, and I thought that would be it for the leaves. I found myself at Conway Summit and this is the view that greeted me:

Just a typical day in Bishop:

Every trip I take, it seems like some of the best sunrises occur on the day I have to leave:

One last look at the Eastern Sierra:

Only 11 more months until it's fall in the Eastern Sierra again.....
