Not much use now, but there is a bypass that goes up and around and then drops back in below that narrow section. It's on the right LDC, back up the canyon a bit. We went to go use it on my trip but the dehydration kicked in and we ended up passed out under a juniper for most of the day.

2 nights | GSENM The Gulch and shit | September -Turned out to be quite an epic. Set up a shuttle with @NateGeesaman (thanks again man!), I came upon the drop off into the slot, and didn't feel comfortable getting down it with Mya (my dog). I turned around and had to make it back to Boulder so I could plead with Nate to get me back to my car (parked at the end of the Old Sheffield Road). 19 miles later, and a very lucky hitchhike, I made it in time. Even as it came, the desert is good. Slept under the stars, perfect temperatures, it's as if my body took a deep breath through every pour and I feel renewed.

No, it wasn't near that. I was never worried of my safety, only making it back for work Monday

Yep. I didn't actually use it, but that looks exactly what we thought was it before we crawled into the shade and got delirious.

Full disclosure, this was all kinda of last minute planning. I usually know a canyon like that better before I attempt it solo, but didn't this time and payed the price. I'm ok, and I was never in danger, but could have used less suffering.

That sounds just like my trip to The Gulch. I hadn't even heard of it, much less researched it. Tried to go do the Egypt Loop and the ranger told me the river was neck deep. I asked if they had any recommendations and they said 'The Gulch'. It was really, really rough, but I imagine for different reasons.

Yeahhh. NO. I re-read most of Desert Solitaire while I was out there. In it, Abbey mentions that people are at the time he wrote trying to dam the Grand just like they did Glen. Thank you, Martin Litton. I sure hope they can stop the gondola too.

I'd be interested in seeing some sort of alternate history in which the Grand was flooded, and the Glen was spared. I wonder if Glen Canyon would have become a tourist destination, or whether it would have remained in relative obscurity - like most of the Colorado plateau. To me, the Grand is unique on the plateau in that its grandeur is obvious and huge - you can take in huge swaths of it at once.
