Winds X'ing P1 - Wild! Route Finding, Grizzlies & Deadfall

Art has a habit of having the only result that comes up when i run a search for some thing, such as 'wind river indian reservation', or the info on amethyst pass. that's actually how i ended up on this sight. thanks Art.

I enjoyed your report quite a bit, and you can see from my current Avatar I'm a big fan of The Northeastern Winds. I agree with the opinion that the fish was a straight cut and that the bone was not a clavicle and it very well may have been from an elk, not moose but the angle has me unsure. On the fire at Wykee Lake I hiked to Sonnicant Lake about 30 years ago, took me about 7.5 hours as I remember. Unfortunately I have an idea of who might have been responsible for your fire. Either a Shoshone or Arapahoe since among other things I was invited to hunt elk in that area on a snowmobile with a baseball bat; or a Dubois area outfitter. Some sheep hunters ride in more than 11 hours in that country and then hunt on foot.

For folks wanting to find some magic in the Winds that doesn't take a week or more to appreciate I'll suggest you look at Ross Lakes from the Glacier Trail Trailhead at Trail Lake just outside of Dubois. 13 miles roundtrip, good trail almost all the way albeit a lungbuster in places, and much greater chance of solitude than almost anything out of Elkhart Park or anything else on the ozone deprived side of the Winds. Here they are from above on Whiskey MT. No goldens but great fishing.

I'm by no means positive but I believe the Downs Mt. Quad is the only one in the 48 not only without a road but also without a trail.

Ab**** have you been up from the Dinwoody headed northish up and over Grasshopper Glacier across the divide down into Bear Basin country?
