Who's stoked to get back in the desert??

I only did the desert in small doses this summer, four or five day trips, one Moab two nighter week before last. Hit the mountains pretty good this year though, if including day trips I did the Uintas at least six or seven times this summer, visited the Henry's, Boulder Mountain, Fish Lake, the La Sals, the Tushars and Elk Ridge. Probably forgetting at least one range...

Fall and winter are always very desert heavy for me though. I don't do the red rock S. Utah stuff as much as the high desert Great Basin stuff - the West Desert, the Owyhee, the Diamond A, the Red Desert, Robbers Roost, The Swell, all over Nevada etc., but I'm out on that high desert a LOT, most weekends, every fall and winter - and am stoked to get the cycle started again!

Thanks for the shout-out Nick.

Yep, I'm ready for some more desert myself -- never really felt fulfilled after having to cut short the Bryce to Moab hike earlier this year. I usually do my main hiking in spring, but sometimes a little car camping excursion to Zion+ in the fall. My girlfriend is running the St. George Marathon in early October so I might try to plan something around that. TBD how that will play out.

I wish I was heading to the Uintas for some backpacking, but it looks like I'll at least try for a car camping desert trip this weekend. That way, if I wake up with back pain, I can just drive home--otherwise, I'll try to get some hiking in. Looking at staying near Three Finger Canyon and hiking along the front and back of the Reef between there and Uneva.

I wish you could join us for Backcountrypost Fest, but I hope you have fun in the desert and I hope your back feels better!

I have been wanting to hike Grand Gulch/Slickhorn canyon loop. Before I get too much older (or they start charging a fee) I think I better try it. I have been all the way to the San Juan in the Gulch, but have never hiked up the San Juan to Slickhorn. I don't know which Slickhorn trailhead i will exit. If anyone has any info about this hike, distance (I think it has to be at least 70 miles depending on the exit), the hike from the Gulch to Slickhorn along the San Juan etc I would greatly appreciate a heads up. If any one is interested coming along obviously let me know. I am thinking of late October or early November.

Nice to see you back in our neck of the woods, gloo! Do anything fun in Alaska?

Nothing too noteworthy, though I did enjoy myself. I didn't have much time to explore but the few times I went running along the one country road it was stunningly beautiful. Made me really wish I could have spent time up there in the outdoors mroe. I went up there to work in a fish cannery in some small dirty town to make money for my last semester of school. Came home with 1/4 of what I was expecting.
