Uinta Trip in Mid October?

My brother and I did a little day trip on Friday and the snow wasn't bad yet, did bald mountain summit then headed back and fished from clegg lake to bench lake. We saw a lot of bear tracks around notch lake so be prepared for pre hibernation bears. That late in the month though anything could happen weather wise.

Nice, @Cuberant. Looks like less snow than I'd expected. A lot has melted off.

Alright guys, I'm going to attempt to do my hike next Thursday (Oct. 20). How are the conditions now, and or looking? I've been looking at Amethyst Trail. Any other final recommendations? How is Red Castle? Also, I would like to incorporate some fly fishing into the trip, if that makes any difference. I've been attracted to Amethyst Trail because it was one of the first things that come along, and not being from the area. It is hard to find the good stuff. Thanks

It's supposed to snow up there this weekend and into Tuesday. You'll probably have to see how much it actually left.

Weather Underground is saying 3-5 inches in Kamas on Monday. If that were the case then the high country will get more, but the .gov prediction is only predicting 1-3 at altitude. Regardless, it's likely that it won't have much time to melt off by Thursday.

Kamas (4,000+ feet lower in elevation):

Be ready for wet/muddy in lower elevations and snow up high. There's snow in the forecast for the weekend and Monday.

Edit: Nick beat me to it. Sorry for the redundance.

Trying to get in the mountains past labor day can never be 100%. You've really just got to watch the weather, and be ready to make a dash for it. If not? The desert is mighty fine this time of year.

Yeah this weekend is looking kind of nasty... making Amethyst Lake look not so doable, guess we will see what it leaves. A few of you have suggested going down south. Any suggestions on this? I would prefer to stay within 3-4 hours of Salt Lake. Just looking for a nice overnight hike, (2 full days of hiking).

Capitol Reef National Park. A little over 3 hours from SLC with plenty of great options. The weather is perfect down there this time of year and the leaves are near peak color.

The NPS site lists most of the good backpacking routes in the park, along with distances and waypoints. You can't go wrong with any of them.
