Papa! What a great moniker for a steward of another species. My dogs are also my family and they return my concern and care for them 10-fold every day. I know they appreciate the wild places I drag them in a much more earthy and sensorial way then I can understand.

What confidence does she lack? My dogs have always been uncomfortable the first time putting the stupid backpack on but, quickly, once they knew they could go hiking ("waLking") if they put up with that itchy thing they learned it was a good idea.

Matter of fact, in the morning of the third day of a backpack when I picked up Merlin's pack and he walked over and put his head through the traces because he know we were to continue the adventure I 'bout busted out grinning with pride :) Merlin is 90 now and refuses to go backpacking without wearing his pack now - I leave it empty for him. (might be more than a little anthropomorphism demonstrated there....)

Today Luna was as confident as any dog I've ever hiked with. She scrambled and climbed like a champ. I didn't tell her the name of the place we were going...Dog Slaughter Falls...I had to call it Dog Slobber Falls so she would get in the car...

Me too! Nick, post your recent pic of the dogs piling on in your backseat please.

Great dogs, Jeff! Do they hike well?
The one in the middle could when she was younger but she got cancer and is no longer with us. The on in the back can hike like a deer. She's getting old too and can't go for as long as she used to but that's still more than me. The little one can hike if you put him in a pack.

Patina's first time on the boat today. I actually convinced her to jump out into open water with me. Granted, she then kicked me and scratched me trying to get back in the boat, but it was still pretty fun. :)

Poor quality GoPro photo. First time using it in over a year and a good reminder why I hate that thing...
