Album Snow and Winter Shots

Arches NP Monday. We stopped at a couple of arches and then broke trail behind the Broken arch out to the Devils campground and back through the fins. We had drenched socks and drenched waterproof shoes. Micro spikes helped in some areas. In other areas snowshoes might been better. It was beautiful.

Arches in the snow is magical!

Small bush next to a rock wall that was dripping water. Couldn't get a good shot of the giant icicles due to the sun angle.

Fairyland Loop yesterday in Bryce. Incredible weather this weekend. Lots of snow, very quiet on the Fairyland loop.

Mostly packed snow. We had a few snow drifts on the rim.

I would highly recommend a visit here on a nice weekend in December, nice and quiet, especially the Fairyland loop.

Love those red rock and snow pix! The Fairyland loop is way quieter, even during busy times-one reason that it is a favourite of ours. Winter thus far in our part of Alberta has been hit and miss- a lot of snow in early October while we went south to the Utah desert, then a month of very dry and warm weather, followed recently by a series of small snow storms alternating with dry spells. Our backcountry skiing is off to a slow start as far as powder turns are concerned due to the low snowpack, but we have had a bit of nice touring around:

Of interest above are the larches that have retained their golden needles, when usually the wind would have blasted them off by now.
The volunteers who groom our local cross country ski trails have been doing amazing work with the thin snow cover though- we've been having a great time, as has our dog. She loves xc skiing!

Unlike many xc ski networks- dogs are welcome, AND allowed off leash here.
Sun and snow under blue skies- it was amazing out in the foothills on Saturday!

I had an afternoon off and went to Deer Hollow Winter Recreation Area, the cross country ski area near Cedar Breaks and the closest to home.
It was a nice afternoon stroll, no one else was out today.

I love skate skiing a lot and can't wait to get my special skate skis by end of the week.
I still need to practice a bit, it's almost 30 years since I did skate skiing the last time.

Fantastic! Glad to hear you got some time off

Canmore to Banff on the Goat Creek trail, Sunday January 6.
Skiers, and a few thoughtless hikers trampling the ski track:mad:, were the sole source of color on this decidedly grey day:

The color version didn't look much different than this slightly warmed monotone below:
