Smartphones and how to get your battery to last...

Forest dweller, this is such a relatable topic. Especially for someone like me who’s new to the forum and just learning how to Solar Smart my own habits (pun intended ). I’ve been experimenting with battery-saving techniques myself since I like to take my Galaxy S23 Ultra on outdoor trips too. It’s an amazing device, but I totally get your frustration with the battery. One thing I’ve found helpful is adjusting the screen brightness manually to keep it as low as possible without compromising visibility—it makes a surprising difference. Also, turning off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and even mobile data when in airplane mode helps, as those can still draw power. For GPS and camera use, you might look into offline maps and downloading them beforehand; they drain less than real-time data retrieval.

How about saving yourself the hassle and just leaving your smartphone at home or in the car on your wilderness sojourn. Go like it was in days gone by and live without ... no phone, no radio, and such. And then immerse yourself into the wilds with letting the wilds, the wildlife, and everything be your companions. One will be enriched incredibly many times over which I have personally experienced. Best to Everyone!

@Kmatjhwy, I definitely understand your perspective. But I've chosen not to have a separate camera and would be quite sad to leave my phone behind. Reviewing photos after trips gives me tremendous pleasure! When I'm upset about people's actions in our "civilized" world, seeing the beauty of our natural world is a great escape. Long after our trips are over, my husband and I delight in watching my slideshows and revel in our happy memories.

Janice and everyone, now letting you know where am coming from. Now am 68 years old and how much of my life was before any of these so called smartphones. And to this day I personally do not have a smartphone and refuse to even get one. Guess am like a dinosaur in this modern day world. I just have a flip phone for when I do need to make a rare phone call and a small Samsung tablet for when need to access the internet.

But for many a year when going into the wilds, would go back into them from Spring to Fall, from late May to September, and often would be back in them a month at a time between resupplies away from everything. Years ago would take a camera with me but anymore do not take any photos. This is after I lost a bunch of digital photos several years ago. But have kept indepth journals from my first hiking in the wilds in 1978 till now.

And from my experiences, there is something extremely powerful in going back into the deep wilds with immersing yourself into them and just living. How many are soooo immersed in our modern day matrix culture, that is all how many people know. But in cutting oneself off of this modern matrix culture and going back with just being in and with the deep wilds in tremandous. What one experiences is beyond words. But to really experience this, to myself and what I experienced, one has to really immerse oneself in the wilds for a prolonged period ..l at least two to three weeks plus in one sojourn. It came to be in those long sojourn that if if if I had something like a small radio or something to connect to that outside world ... I would smash it to bits. And today so many are so connected to their smartphones, like an umbilical cord. In my opinion one needs to sever all of these connections with just immersing themselves for a prolonged prolonged period in the deep wilds. And what one receives when back in the deep wilds is sooooo incredible that it can Not really be put into words. One gets back into paradise and experiences where everything is connected with the Spirit that moves thru all things. And all of these modern contraptions just get in the way. Most of human history there were no smartphones, radios, or such .... so go without. Keep an good indepth journal, one will have their memories, and just go live in the wilds. And what one experiences will change their life for the rest of the days. The old mountain men and Indians did not have a freaking smartphone. Guess for myself how often have felt was born 150 to 200 years to late. There is still plenty of good wild country out there where we human two leggeds can get away from this modern matrix culture with really disappearing into the wilds and living good and easy for prolonged periods. But just saying in going into the deep wilds, cutting oneself off from these modern contraptions, and immersing living truly in the wilds. What one will be rewarded with in return will be incredible beyond words, for have been to this place myself before. In my opinion. Wishing Everyone the Best!
