Sleeping bag decision : WM Versalite vs Apache MF

Hi,

I have decided that it's finally time to splash the cash on a quality sleeping bag from Western Mountaineering. The only problem is I can't quite decide between the Apache MF and the Versalite.

The Versalite is the more expensive, having a 10F temperature rating, as opposed to 15F for the Apache MF. It is also (despite the WM website stating equal weights) about 2oz heavier than the Apache, anecdotally.

The Apache MF uses a slightly heavier and more durable shell fabric, and is slightly narrower with a 59" shoulder girth, as opposed to the 62" for the Versalite. I think that the commonly used Ultralite bag (20F rating) also has the 59" girth.

I generally tend to prefer the slightly 'cosier' feel of a narrower bag, so the Apache is just inching ahead in my consideration, at the moment.

I realise that I probably can't go far wrong with any WM bag, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice on my decision ?

Thanks.

The microfiber bag will resist moisture if that’s a concern for you. Otherwise as you say they are very similar. You probably already did but ‘apache mf versus versalite’ search on google brings up a fair amount of opinions.

No experience with the Apache but my WM Versalite is now over 20 years old and going strong. Sent it back to have 3z of down added since I thought it was time. But, that increased the volume too much for my packing system. Had excess removed. Team at WM are outstanding. This all happened during the first COVID peak as well.

One factor to consider is if you keep extra gear/clothes in the bag to dry them or for extra warmth. I got a 6'6" vs 6' as I thought I could use the extra room. So far haven't needed it often. The newer WM bags have lighter fabrics than mine, but the $375 I spent back then for a ca. 2lb bag was totally worth it.

I got an apache mf bag last year and its great. The durability and wind resistance of the mf makes up for the extra 1oz down the versalite in my opinion. I sleep warm so i dont see any problem going beyond its rating. I can not use this bag in summer, It is just too warm.

Thanks for the advice ... I have ordered the Apache, and now can't wait to try it out ...

I was just typing my response when you said you ordered the Apache! lol. You will love the apache. I have used both these bags and would recommend the apache. I can't keep up with all the WM bag names, but if the versalite is the green one I didn't like it as well as the apache. even though the fabric is lighter and less water resistant- it also doesn't breathe as well..... I would often wake up to my legs sweating in the versalite. So I gave that bag to my teenage son and bought the apache for me!
