Thank you Google says it's a pepsis wasp, also known as a tarantula hawk, because it lays its eggs inside a tarantula by injecting them with eggs. I think it's about 3 inches long.

How interesting and terrifying! I am going to have to google them myself! Haha

Great trip. We did a very similar one in 2014 but exited up Davis to the horse trail exit. Brought our dog also. We were able to climb that waterfall near your camp in Davis but I think there is a bypass to the right looking up canyon. Pretty canyon.
