The trail is still open, you just can't enter the alcove any longer. The same thing happened to the ruin on Aztec Butte a while back.

From what I gathered from other online sources, the trail still remained open out to the overlook views after the first incident, but apparently there has now been a second incident. And so when I read that headline, I took it to mean that access meant the whole trail was now closed. Either way, it's still sad that those wishing to go up into the actual alcove to look out from it with their own eyes or to practice some photography at the actual site aren't allowed to now. I'm thankful I was able to find my way out to it in April 2013.

I'd wager a hefty sum that it's getting much, much less frequent. We're just hearing about it more.

That could be the case as well. Social media does have the ability to greatly enhance a particular story or event.

Looks like this happened last week, but didn't see anything posted here about it yet. I always assumed being up in the mountains and out in the wilderness somewhere would be safer to be during an earthquake than in the city. Guess it all depends on where you're at when in said wilderness as it can be just as dangerous. And poor old Smoothie! I'm not a climber, so was not familiar with this feature, but still...wow!
