I hiked the Skyline Trail in Jasper National Park in early August last summer. As trails go, it's a scenic highlight of the area, with most of it's miles above tree line. A little more than 35 miles, i did it with three nights, with the first and last being as close to the trail heads as possible. I camped at Evelyn Creek, Curator, and Signal.

Click here to view on CalTopo

The first few miles of the trail, from the parking lot at Maligne Lake, are forested, not much to see. It's not too long before you begin to get some views. The trees open occasionally for some glimpses before you come to Little Shovel Pass.
004.JPG

Nearing Little Shovel Pass you can see the peaks of the Queen Elizabeth Ranges that rise on the other side of Maligne Lake.

Little Shovel Pass.

When i got to the top of the pass i climbed the ridge to the right of it for some views.

DSCF3308.JPG

I love these things.
DSCF3321.JPG

Looking back from the pass at the Queen Elizabeth Ranges.
DSCF3323.JPG

Looking beyond the pass, West, across the Jeffery Creek drainage toward Big Shovel Pass.
DSCF3329.JPG

The ridge i walked, Maligne Lake and the Queen Elizabeth Ranges to the right of it.
DSCF3349.JPG

Maligne Lake is the largest natural body of water in the Canadian Rockies. It's very popular for canoe trips.
DSCF3353.JPG

A 360 from the top of the ridge.
DSCF3362.JPG

Maligne Lake and the surrounding view, Southeast.
DSCF3364.JPG

Zoomed. Nice peaks. Samson on the right i believe.
DSCF3373.JPG

Zoomed on a couple bench lakes above Little Shovel Pass on the other side.
DSCF3383.JPG

View from the ridge above Little Shovel Pass looking Southwest. The pass below me on the left.
DSCF3384.JPG

Zoomed on some good colors to the Northeast, again in the Queen Elizabeth Ranges.
DSCF3386.JPG

Below Little Shovel Pass, crossing the Snowbowl area.

DSCF3414.JPG

Nearing Big Shovel Pass, looking back East at Little Shovel Pass just left of center.
DSCF3458.JPG

I like the giant whit boulders out in the grass.
DSCF3469.JPG

Looking back, practically at Big Shovel Pass. When i got to the pass i walked to the top of Curator Mountain to take the view from there.
DSCF3476.JPG

I found a lot of goats on the other side of the pass.

DSCF3502.JPG

This guy just laid down as i walked past.
DSCF3503.JPG

Looking just East of South from the top of Curator. It was nice up here.
DSCF3539.JPG

Looking Northwest. This night i would camp in the trees below center of the frame, and then the next day i would hike back up, pass the lake, and head up and left of it to a feature called The Notch, where some really nice ridge walking would begin.
DSCF3542.JPG

Looking North.
DSCF3558.JPG

A shorter panorama of the North. The Watchtower is on the left, a very beautiful inexplicably unnamed peak is just left of center, and the Queen Elizabeth Ranges are in the distance on the right.
DSCF3561.JPG

Southeast panorama.
DSCF3562.JPG

Zoomed South. I believe Mount Kerkeslin is the dominant feature, and Brussels Peak and Mount Lowell are the distant towers on the right. You can see them in the panorama above as well. I was a little fixated with the view of those towers. Farther along the trail i would be able to see three of them when Mount Christie came in to view.
DSCF3565.JPG

An other view to the North. I believe the background ridges are the Colin Range. They have all kinds of ranges here.
DSCF3576.JPG

360 from the top of Curator. Looking across the Athabasca River to the West on the right.
DSCF3592.JPG

May be i included too many shots looking to the North.
029.JPG

DSCF3606.JPG

I hiked back down, grabbed my pack and continued on. It was evening now. This marmot was basking in the sun, but then ran away from me.
DSCF3652.JPG

DSCF3653.JPG

DSCF3654.JPG

I walked up a side trail to view over a ridge. This trail provides a midpoint access from the road.
DSCF3661.JPG

040.JPG

I hiked back down and continued toward camp. This picture is looking back toward Big Shovel Pass.
DSCF3676.JPG

Big Shovel Pass and Curator Mountain. I just walked right up the shoulder.
DSCF3679.JPG

Sun going down in the Notch.
DSCF3689.JPG

Curator Mountain, near a trail junction. The Curatorcamp site is on the valley floor below here.
DSCF3694.JPG

I liked the cliffs above cliffs here.
DSCF3699.JPG

The next day, heading toward the Notch. I liked the mixed rock colors.
DSCF3725.JPG

On the right side you can see the trail going up. It was lovely.
DSCF3727.JPG

Cutator Lake, the Notch on the right.
DSCF3730.JPG

Looking back, Curator Mountain on the left.
DSCF3737.JPG

Closer.
DSCF3738.JPG

From the top. I went to the top of the ridge on the right here to look around also. It only took a few minutes.
DSCF3749.JPG

360 from the top of that ridge.
DSCF3760.JPG

Looking Northwest, you can see across the Athabasca River, and the continuation of the Skyline Trail.
DSCF3762.JPG

The Watchtower.
DSCF3765.JPG

The trail, the Notch on the right.
DSCF3768.JPG

Southeast.
DSCF3769.JPG

Edith Cavell, to the Southwest.
DSCF3775.JPG

A snow capped peak called Mount Robson to the Northwest, more than fifty miles away.
DSCF3782.JPG

Walked back down, continued along the trail.
DSCF3797.JPG

The trail, some large cairns, and Robson in the distance.
DSCF3799.JPG

A trailless drainage North of the Skyline.
DSCF3807.JPG

Fantastic ridge walking. From the Notch to Mount Tekarra really is the best of the Skyline Trail.
DSCF3812.JPG

A few hikers.
DSCF3822.JPG

Edith Cavell across the Athabasca River. The Icefield Parkway runs through here. Those three towers are visible on the left.
DSCF3824.JPG

DSCF3831.JPG

That trailless drainage again, The Watchtower above it.
DSCF3832.JPG

Looking back.
DSCF3834.JPG

More beautiful trail.
DSCF3854.JPG

Mount Tekarra comes in to view. I left the trail near here to spend a couple hours walking the ridge to the top of Tekarra and back.
DSCF3855.JPG

What a face.
DSCF3866.JPG

Athabasca River, etc.
DSCF3869.JPG

Mount Tekarra, Excelsior, and Centre Mountain.
DSCF3880.JPG

Getting there. Closer the walking would get a little dicier.
DSCF3882.JPG

Jasper below me.
DSCF3885.JPG

When i arrived here i went to the right around the prominence and scrambled through the rocks there. It wasn't bad.
044.JPG

Easy up big rocks. Not too steep.
DSCF3890.JPG

Once above that i was able to walk to the true summit.
DSCF3894.JPG

Looking back Southeast.
DSCF3901.JPG

360 from the top of Mount Tekarra.
DSCF3908.JPG

Looking across the river again for some reason. I did like the sun streaks.
DSCF3911.JPG

A small pond immediately below me.
DSCF3931.JPG

The Colin Range and beyond.
047.JPG

Southeast also.
048.JPG

South.
DSCF3948.JPG

Heading back down, looking at the ridge.
DSCF3954.JPG

DSCF3955.JPG

Just right over the top.
DSCF3960.JPG

A good view of Edith Cavell. Finally some light on it.
DSCF3961.JPG

Looking back at Tekarra's face.
DSCF3965.JPG

East from the ridge i walked.
DSCF3967.JPG

Looking back at Tekarra again, closer to the trail.
DSCF3971.JPG

An even better view of Edith Cavell.
DSCF3981.JPG

Mount Kekeslin.
DSCF3984.JPG

Those towers, Mount Christie, Brussels Peak, and Mount Lowell.
DSCF3985.JPG

And together.
DSCF3986.JPG

Back on the trail, heading down below Tekarra.

After camping the last night at Signal, the last few miles are unremarkable, down an old road that they let bikes on.

Benito!

Now those are mountains! :) Great hike and a great place. Almost makes you want to climb something... Let's go climb Samson.
You saw Edie ! (Edith Cavell) That look like something to climb? I did the left hand skyline up and the right hand skyline down - back in the day.

The pano of your stick figure shadow is sweet!

The Canadian Rockies are far and away the most extensive mountains I've been to. Standing on top of several I could see high peaks as far as I could see in all compass directions. Wild place.

Beautiful and really great photos.

They're all really good but I especially like these two...

I was so excited when I saw that you posted a trip report here, because I knew there would be a ton of awesome photos. (I've been debating for years over where to prioritize this trail on my 'Routes to Do Before I Die' list.)

You really lucked out on the weather - this route is notorious for being socked in &/or mucky.

The epic continues! Beautiful scenery @Ben. Thanks for taking the time to put it all together for us.

@Art , i'll go climb any thing you want. i looked at the info on climbing Edith Cavell. it looked a little beyond me, but i'd tag along some one that knew what they were doing.
i had the same experience as you. every time i got on top of some thing, mountains to the horizon in every direction.
i saw no bear sign on the trail. but i did see a bear on the side of the road on the ride in.

@John , i thought you might like those ones.

@Langdon , i'd paid my dues in bad weather over the month prior. also it started raining again the last night of the hike, and was bad the next couple days. but the main days of this trip were fantastic.

thanks @scatman

Your TRs are fantastic and like @Langdon Greene said, I know there'll be plenty of amazing pics. The views look amazing. I've had the canadian rockies on my list for a while but I haven't even made it to Glacier yet. Now it seems like I need to take a LONG trip to experience this area too.
I'm in for climbing those peaks! @Artemus is in. I've always wanted to climb the bugaboos and this area looks stellar as well.
Salud!

The Bugs are more even more appealing to me and more my style, being granite, and I have been there a couple of times and climbed Pigeon Spire and the 50 crowded's route on Bugaboo Spire in Aug. '96. I wonder if could find my old silver oxide positives of it, scan 'em in and write a TR?

Wow Ben. Long stretches of alpine tundra! With peaks like that in every direction. Incredible.

Thanks for showing us the trail.

Wow! I've never heard of this place. Must be a well kept secret. Your great pictures make me want to go.

Great stuff!!! It was fun to see Jasper from a different view! Of the four parks that border each other, Jasper is my favorite, hands down!
