I just learned that my friend and long-time Backcountry Post member @gnwatts passed away a few days before Christmas. His son posted this on his Facebook page last night:

I had the pleasure of Greg's company on many trips, both on the water and by foot. I'll never forget that first float trip we did on Ruby Horsethief when he hauled most of our gear in his canoe when we were in duckies. I still can't believe he kept it upright through a couple of the bigger riffles. Greg had a deep appreciation for wild places and making the most of the time he had. We had been talking about getting together this fall and it just didn't work out. He was a great guy and I will miss him.

My sweet girl Sage passed away right before Christmas as well. It sounds like it might have been the same day. Float on, my friend.

So sorry to hear about Greg as well as Sage. I enjoyed many of Greg's posts over the years here on BCP and he was a talented photographer.

Sage was a beautiful pup, and it looks like she had a great life.

These passings are so very hard. I don't live that far from where Greg lived, and we planned to get together one of these days, but time moves along regardless of one's intentions.

Sad ...

Sorry to hear of this. 2025 seemed to be a year of loss for many of us unfortunately.

Always loved his black and white photography from his river trips, his photos of the mountains from his home, and his narrations on his reports. I'll never forget the little interaction I had on here where @Nick posted a photo of him, which I compared to Bob Balaban. Links if you'd like a little smile:

Nick's comment and photo (a fantastic photo, by the way)

My response and the few comments afterward

And here's his thread he sometimes updated with photos from his home.

Thank you for letting us know, Nick.

Sad to hear. Heard of so many passing on as of late. Wishing the best to his family.

I’m so sorry for the loss of your special companions.

Every once in awhile I’ve wondered if people from this forum who used to participate but no longer do (no one in particular, just in general) have passed away without anyone being aware. (I realize that some people would stop participating due to being busy or becoming disinterested.) So when I saw this message about your friend’s passing, it made me think of this again. I remember during Covid I especially wondered if some on here wouldn’t make it. Since this is the main aspect of my life where I interact with people I’ve never met and probably never will, it’s weird to think about connections that could just end without knowing why…
