Highline To WFBF part 5

Let us know how it goes. If it works well I think I might try something similar.

I buy Mountain House in the #10 can and put them into a freezer zip lock bag, so the speciality bags are not necessary. @WasatchWill mentioned a while back that he made a bag with some unique fabric (don't remember what it is called) that has a reflective side.

Chocolate Brownie Clif Bars are the best!
One of those and a bottle of water has been my breakfast at work for 10 years.

Chocolate Brownie - had 2 this morning myself!:)

Breakfast Skillet. We eat them just like the dinners-right out of the bag. We also make our own oatmeal mix and include freeze dried raspberries, strawberries, dried bananas, walnuts and sometimes other goodies. Usually have 2 full cups of it for breakfast.

I like the sound of this! Do you do your own dried fruits or do you buy them? If you buy them what brand and from where? I

I used to eat cliff bars, but I ended up having kidney stones after a few months of eating them regularly, turns out soy is not a good thing to eat if you are predisposed to kidney stones.

Now I make my own granola bars from scratch, with oats, flax seed, sunflower seeds, walnuts, almonds, dried cranberries, dried apricots, dried mango, dried figs, coconut, and all held together with vanilla and honey. Beats the heck out of cliff bars, I down one of those and it fuels me for few hours. I make a big batch in the early summer and freeze them so I always have some on hand.

Apparently I've haven't done a good job of reading ingredents. I never noticed that the protien was soy. Soy isn't good for any guy. Think of soy as an anti-testoterone. These bars are actually my favorite, but I've gone with the Clif because they are soo much cheaper. I guess my backpacking diet is getting an upgrade! Thanks Andy!

Freezer bag meals are really big with some guys, just google it. No need to buy the metal style if going that route-although some would suggest s cozy.

I don't mind dishes even with a drycamp.

Freezer bag meals always sketched me out in regard to the chemicals leaching out with boiling water going on. I have nothing really to support that paranoia, but it seems logical. I carry a foldable bowl or just eat out of my little titanium kettle. Cleaning is a non-issue if there is a dog around. :)

I'll have to consult the chef but all sourced local. Would love to have a freeze drier but both expensive and high maintenance if the lab units I have used are any indication.

Well I just looked them up and they say they don't have soy in them. I must have been mistaken, I think maybe I was eating power bars and not cliff bars. I honestly can't remember.

You were right Andy. After your comment yesterday I went through my trash and found the most recent one I'd eaten and there it is . . .

The blueberries are just Mountain House, but while not too much cheaper, the best berries are from the local co-op and made by "Just Tomatoes, Etc!". www.justtomatoes.com. We don't go out of our way too much to get organic but these are certified as such. It would be worth looking into bulk. Costco has freeze dried strawberries but they are chinese and I'm not going to be eating those. COOL was a very good thing!

Thanks John! I've got my first BP trip in a few weeks, so I'm excited to give these a try!

Hi my name is Devin, I live in Utah County and I like Cliff bars as well..

Great TR btw Ned, enjoyed the string. I did an overnighter at Deadhorse and just that portion is awesome. I imagine it was an awesome and memorable trip!

Here's a link to my post on that. http://backcountrypost.com/index.php?posts/39685

I'll just re-emphasize a few points on the Freezer Bag concerns others like @Nick have shared:

1. Ziploc brand bags are 100% free of BPA and dioxins.

2. Water does not need to be boiling to sufficiently rehydrate a meal. You can bring it to near boiling, or just let the water rest a minute off the heat before placing it in bag.

3. Apparently there was some concerns years ago that still circulates that alleged toxic dioxins from some plastics combined with fat and microwave heat would leach the dioxins into food and thus the body. Apparently some further research was done and it was found that in order for dioxins to be released from plastics, chlorine had to be present and temperatures had to exceed 1500 Fahrenheit. This info comes from the Ziploc site, but again, they state their bags are made without dioxins anyway.

As for the TR here... Awesome! I couldn't wait for the rest to be posted, so I actually viewed the rest of them on your website a while back.
