Has Anyone Here Done Alta Via 1?

Have any of you done the Alta Via 1 route in the Dolomites in Italy? This is now on my bucket list and I want to do it.
Love to get some insight and suggestions.
Amy and thru-hiked the Alta Via 1 in August of last year. Our trip report can be found at: doingmiles.com/2022-08-italy-av1/

This was our first trip in the Dolomites and we enjoyed the walk quite a lot. We discuss the issue in our report, but the big choice you must make is whether to camp or use the refuges. There are plus and minuses for both options. We camp because we like the freedom of not having to be at a particular lodge on a particular day and neither of us want to sleep in the communal rooms. But the lodges make eating easy and you don't have to carry as much gear. Enjoy your walk. James

@Janice
We just got back on Tuesday! Had a great time, light rain one morning and then almost not a cloud in the sky. The Northern sections had some people on them, mostly close to trailheads, but the farther South we went the less we saw. Some places we would walk for a few hours without seeing anyone! We definitely missed out on the flowers, but the solitude was worth it! Going to Verona and Venice was a bit of a culture shock after the hike!

I will get a short trip report with lots of photos put up hopefully next week.

Great to hear! We had a similar experience with fewer people further south. I can easily imagine the culture shock of the crowded cities after being in the mountains. Looking forward to your report and photos!

We walked this in 2022. It is an excellent route and well worth doing. Keep in mind that if you plan on over-nighting in the refuges, reservations will be mandatory as these book up fast; reserve early. Your other option is to book an organized trip where overnights are included. Or do as we did and wild camp, which worked out well. enjoy,

James and Amy

@Janice thanks for the reminder. I had meant to write something up when I got back from the trip but it slipped my mind. I did just post that trip report thought.
