First hint, if you were traveling to Oregon in the mid 1800's, you would be on the lookout for one of the landmarks in this range (which is actually behind me where I took this photo).

Independence Rock Granite mountains?

The peak is actually called Moonstone, just to the North of Split Rock, another landmark just to the West of Independence Rock. All in the Granite Mtns. Here is William Henry Jackson's photo from 1870 of Split Rock.
