Guess the spot

Reminds me a lot of the Bob Marshall or Great Bear areas in Flathead country.

The Green River - oops, too late as usual
Story of my life.

Not the Bob or the Great Bear. If you were to look north from here, you'd see a beautiful area that was despoiled a few decades ago by a nationally known media personality ...

I figured that clue would narrow things down pretty fast. :)

It's not quite the Gallatins, though. If not the mountain I'm on, maybe somebody can ID the mountains in the second view, which are a great backpack destination.

You are at the pass at the head of Tom Miner basin

OT: If you're in Boze, go out and look for the Aurora tonight. Big magnetic storm. They were spotted clear down in Cheyenne early this a.m.

Let's see:

Not in the Gallatins, one range west
not the Gravellys
south of Big Sky
old building on top
can see good backpacking range
not Tom Miner Basin
we're dancing around it

We need more clues! :)

Expedition Pass? (WAG)

So, from the hints so far, it's got to be somewhere in the Madisons (or a subrange like the Spanish Peaks), and near Ted Turner's ranch, looking into the Lee Metcalf Wilderness. I just can't pinpoint the mountain that would have an abandoned fire lookout on it.

It is indeed a fire lookout. Is it cheating to use Google Image? If not, I have it. (CM) If it is, I'll bow out.

I did pull that photo off the web tonight, but in all fairness I was the original photographer. :) I've actually been volunteering at a fire lookout in northwest Montana this week, and don't have all my images with me.

If you want to absolve yourself for using Google image search, you can name the mountains in the second photo! ;-)

OK, I guess I'm absolved of skating along for now. I've been wanting to post this to see if it goes as fast as my last one. Name the feature AND the nearest town OR what state it's in (ignore the oversaturation, it was a rainy day and PS got a little damp):

That's Devil's Slide, in the upper Yellowstone River valley a few miles north of Gardiner, Montana.
