The recent Glen Canyon Dam thread inspired me to start a simple blog to share my photos of Glen Canyon, particularly ones that show off the recovery of it as the lake level drops. It is called Glen Canyon Rising. It's a work in progress, but I encourage anyone interested to subscribe to the blog and like it on Facebook, and maybe even Instagram. Each photo I post includes coordinates and water level data to give readers an idea of how the recovery looks in various places.

Thanks for looking.

Pretty cool Nick.
Perhaps a link to the current water level?

I do have a link to the water database website on the main menu (click on top right corner to display), but a more prominent water level display could be very cool. I'll look into it.

This should be pretty neat to see, look forward to some more of your pics Nick.

Thanks, Riggs.

Maybe I'll post a photo over here now and then to help build up some traffic on the blog. I've been going through old photos first. The one I posted today was from a backpacking trip in Willow Gulch in 2011. I'd guess the lake would have only been about 30-40 feet deep here at full pool, so it has had plenty of time to recover. Hard to tell there was ever a lake there.

Cool looking site Nick. The About page is a nice, well-written narrative. Interesting concept on the name too. Nice job.

I'm debating the options for my packraft trip in less than 2 weeks. Willow Gulch to Fiftymile, or Davis Gulch to Fiftymile (my first choice)...although Willow Gulch now has me intrigued. It looks like you can get almost all the way down Willow. Either way seeing these reborn canyons has me just a little excited.

I think if you do Willow you should definitely do the loop with Fortymile, so that might make the other option better for the packraft.

I need another week of vacation. 2 weeks is just a tease.

I was just going to ask that...
Now I'm considering looping Fifty/Willow with a side trip over to Davis exiting at the sand slide in Fiftymile. 4 days. That would still give me time to explore Fortymile. Epic. Either way, I'll have some new photos for ya from at least 2 of these canyons.

It's been a while since I checked back in on this thread. Glen Canyon Rising has grown like a willow in a nicely recovered tributary of Glen Canyon. I've pretty much focused all the attention on the Facebook page which has been a great way to spread the word. It's pretty common for the posts on there to have reach well into the thousands with the top post at over 25k views now. Sweet!!

This has opened up new opportunities to show people that Glen Canyon isn't a lost cause. I've worked with the Glen Canyon Institute on several projects this year. First, the Glen Canyon Living Atlas - an interactive map with photos of the canyons recovering. They aren't all my photos, but I supplied quite a few of them to help get it off the ground. Check it out here: http://www.glencanyon.org/media_center/living-atlas

Most recently I supplied GCI with photos for their 2017 Glen Canyon Restored calendar as well as their annual publication Hidden Passage. That is actually what reminded me to revisit this thread. If you are a fan of Glen Canyon, those calendars are now on sale for $20 through GCI at http://www.glencanyon.org/store/posters-art. ALL proceeds go to Glen Canyon Institute and toward their goal of restoring a free flowing Colorado River through Glen Canyon. If you like pretty photos of pretty places and supporting a good cause, head on over and pick one up.

If spending $20 isn't your thing, fear not, because I'm going to be giving away at least 5 of these calendars randomly to BCP members who have posted trip reports recently. What recently means is TBD, but if you've been holding out on us, there's some motivation to stop. :)

Here's a teaser:

Looks like I'll be running out of these calendars sooner than expected. For all of you who have posted a trip report on BCP within the last 6 months, post here if you'd like to be entered in the drawing for a free calendar.

Big feather in your photography and conservation cap buster! Don't put me in the drawing - I will buy one to support the cause.
