Fat Man's Misery, Zion

I could be enticed into a trip like that, depending on the amount of time off from work necessary.

Parunaweap from the top- near Mt Carmel junction, is a great backpack. Drop a car at the Checkerboard/Fatmans trailhead. One night midcanyon, the second night at/near the Fatmans/parunaweap junction. Third morning hit Fatmans with only canyon gear, leaving backpack gear there, then pick it up and hike it out to car after finishing the canyon. Parunaweap is as beautiful as the Narrows, with the added benefit of not canyoneering or camping inside the park- so no permit$, group limits or hassle. And no people, so it doesn't feel like the Narrows- 4th of July in Liberty Park crowds. Non canyoneers in the group could hang out for the 3rd day, rest up, and maybe hike the 1/2 mile down canyon to Labyrinth Falls to take in some more scenery. A wonderful 3 day weekend.

Wow nick! Those photos are amazing! Love the color in the canyon! Great job on the video too! :twothumbs:

Nick - I'm considering this route next month, about June 12th or so. Do you think wet suits are needed? I know many people say not, in the heat of summer, but June is still a bit early. Not a fan of cold canyon water!

Definitely no wetsuits. We did it last weekend and both Bill and I both lugged our suits in our packs and never took them out.

Thanks, Tyler. Good news!

Checking out your Flickr photos...

Agreed on the wetsuits. For most people, wetsuits would only be necessary in very cold and very wet conditions. Typical Spring/Summer/Fall conditions are no problem. Also, the canyon is very dry right now (I did it yesterday). Be careful doing it in June. It can be a pretty hot and exposed approach/exit. Have plenty of water capacity. There's a great spring on the left LDC a couple bends down from Misery on the way to the exit.
