Ensign Peak to Grandview Peak - October 9, 2023

Fabulous foliage out there. That is a heck of a day, and really crappy that it was capped off with that stab o_O Insult to injury, having to go that much longer without eating anything after such a long hike!

Similar to Mormon Crickets or vinagaroons, but I guess they're different. I did get bit by one when a kid. It was in my shoe. It hurt, but not as much as a pine beetle bite.

I didn't know pine beetles would bite. I've held one in my hand before.

Nice accomplishment Hugh.

I had hoped you'd be wearing your bright orange kilt in the middle of hunting season. . . instead I see you wore you camouflage one. At least you had your orange cycling cap on. :)

I agree with @TheMountainRabbit -- I don't see you hanging those boots up just yet.

We do need to see about keeping you away from sharp objects. The image of a famished @scatman trying to stab his way into a burrito is a good one. . . I'm sorry the story had to end with some bloodletting.

Are you telling us it is easier to puncture thru your skin than a burrito wrapper?

I wanted to test out my new kilt. It is a keeper!

Those boots are getting closer to the peg downstairs.

No, the burrito wrapper had a whole in it after the stab, but it deflected off the frozen solid burrito. I guess it could have been the angle of entry. I'll need you to work on the Physics of it all for me. Just please don't include a frictionless plane in your calculations. :D

The fall colors are the best they have been in years here along the Wasatch.

I had to get up in the early morning hours and eat some dry Cheerios because I was so hungry and couldn't sleep. :)

This was a Canadian one, so maybe it had been reading Robert Service or something. Worst bite pain I've ever had from a bug. I had some spray on Benadryl or I might've ended up dead or something.

He's the Bard of the Yukon. Sounds like my kind of guy.

I was actually at Coal River just north of Liard River Hot Springs in BC. I pulled into a gas station with old beat-up pumps and this old character of a guy came out to pump gas and immediately started talking about some grizzly that had been hanging around. He then pointed to a pine beetle that was on the pumps and told me how mean they were, worse than a grizz. I thought he was joking, but he said they like to get under your shirt where you can't get to them then sting you. That next morning, I put my boots on (was camping) and there was one in a boot but I didn't see it and it bit me on the foot. That's how I ID'd it as a pine beetle, but maybe it was something else. It had really long antennae and was black. It was a really intense experience and I now always carry spray-on Benadryl in my back pocket pannier whereever I go. I was traumatized and if my story helps even one person, I'm happy.
