In 2018 I thru hiked the Continental Divide Trail, and I'd like to share the first episode in a 31 part series with you:

CDT Ep 1 THUMB for posting.jpg

The first 3 videos will be posted today. The remainder of the videos will be released on a daily or every other day basis. I won't bombard you all with each new episode as it is released. If you like what you see in the first 3 episodes, you can subscribe to my youtube channel to be informed when each new video comes out.

I put an enormous amount of effort into these videos. I carried 5lbs of camera gear throughout my thru hike, amassed 6000 video clips and have spent months editing. I hope you enjoy the videos and please let me know what you think!

Good videos...wish there was more commentary.

Thank you! Some episodes have more commentary than others. But in general, I tried not to be that rambling hiker that talks for the sake of talking:D

Just curious, what type of additional commentary were you looking for? I'm still editing the remaining videos, so I could potentially make adjustments.

This looks like a great way to spend a rainy afternoon. Definitely gonna check it out.

Btw, I'm not the arbiter of how other people's CDT experiences ought to be... but I love the way you guys did it. Los of JLey dotted purples and homebrewed stuff. Choose your own adventure. Great fun!

Thanks man! But wait, you have time to watch hiker videos? Aren't you supposed to be hiking somewhere, killing all of us in this year's bag challenge? haha

Looking for forward to your videos! I appreciate the time the effort doing all of that - I on the other hand will just throw something together without much editing or music background or not do it at all. Thanks for packing that extra camera gear!

I've been enjoying these. Very well done.

When I get a chance to thru hike it will be the CDT.

I am loving your videos!!!! When I see the vista's that you seem to be constantly a part of I can't fully understand why someone would do the Appalachian Trail.

Very well done! I’m totally envious. I watched the Chama to Pagosa Springs first. I’m very familiar with both towns and my first short CDT section was in the South San Juans.
Not to start a gear discussion, but what brand and model is the blue backpack you’re using leaving Chama?

Your Sawtooths video was inspiring, such a beautiful and relatively unknown patch of land.

Just started your CDT series, you strike a great balance of scenery and narration (and include much more detail about the trail than the average YouTuber, you did your homework)

Sorry if already asked, but what camera do you use for video recording?

Very cool, @metalbackpacker - I recognize your name from somewhere, maybe your blog/page, or other backpacking forums possibly. Thanks for doing this! This is winter-time porn for me (says my wife).

I just now bookmarked the tab on your SeekingLost page to go back and peruse more later. (Possibly this evening.) Did you do a summary post / synopsis, with stuff like your favorite segments (and least favorite segments)? Or things you would do differently (gear, routes, seasons/timing, etc)?

Thanks Zero! My older videos, I did no (or very little) commentary, so this is a new format for me. I appreciate that feedback, that's really nice to hear. And the Sawtooths, oh yeah, can't wait to get back there and hit up the northern section that I missed. And the Frank Church area to the north!

For video, I'm using a GoPro Hero4 on an Evo SS gimbal, mounted on a mini tripod/grip. The gimbal makes it nice and smooth, but it had a lot of jitters to it that I either edited around or sometimes let slide and you probably see every now and then. That really bugs me. I had the gimbal motors replaced after the hike under warranty, but haven't used it yet to really see if it's cleared up.

Hey if your wife approved of your porn selection then you're doing pretty good! I didn't do any other CDT posts on the blog other than the sections, and a pre-hike ramble. As soon as I finished updating the blog, I got started on the videos. It's taken much longer than anticipated! A lot of the supplemental information as you mentioned, I have a big list of those types of topics I will go into detail on in youtube videos first, and hopefully on the blog second.

Oh my hello! Magnificent videos, man!

I just watched the Weminuche section, from Wolf Pass north. I have been wanting to get my wife to do a three-week section out there with me, your videos should do the trick to sell her on the idea. :sneaky: NICE!!

I can't wait to see some of the other sections.

Thank you for the porn! ;)
