Good on ya' for not wanting to disturb the nest. But it may have been poppa...many bird fathers sit the nest too, or even by themselves.
I saw the nest in the same place when I was there in May 2010. The mama/papa was a crow and kept swooping in and out as I and other group checked out the slot. Kinda sad. Even more sad was that there was one egg in the nest and another broken on floor. BTW -- I'm assuming the crow was the mama/papa -- it could have been a predator I guess.
And... I hate to be redundant, but there are a bunch of amazing photos in this thread!
