We woke up to about an inch of snow this morning in the Squaw Flat campground at The Needles and it was still coming down. I'm going to try go get one more night in this year for an even 80, but not sure if it's going to happen...

Squaw Flat Snow
by Randy Langstraat, on Flickr

@IntrepidXJ - We were thinking of you two this morning, it's been coming down all day in Moab. After we passed your CG yesterday evening again, the roads out of The Needles and Indian Creek were all clear of yesterday's morning sleet and ice. Today it's been all snow. Hope the ride home wasn't too bad.
79 nights is still spectacular !

It was nice meeting you yesterday and talking to you guys for a few minutes. I'm glad you enjoyed the hike. Anyway, the ride home sucked, but it wasn't because of the snow: http://adventr.co/microposts/my-morning-in-photos/

Again!??! Isn't that the same wheel that it happened on before?

Yes it is. That's why I had spares this time! I have just ordered new axle shafts for the rear since I am guessing the flange is probably bent. If that's not the problem, I have no idea what might be?

Jeez, that sucks. :( I've had it on my to-do list to carry spare lug nuts and bolts since it happened to you the first time. I think this week I'll actually buy them!

I'm certainly glad I had them with me this morning!

It’s unusual for wheel studs to break like that unless they have been over or under torqued. Are the wheels OEM or aftermarket?

OEM wheels and tires. This has happened twice on the same location (passenger rear...this time it happened with a different wheel since they've been rotated) and I have been careful about torquing the lugnuts since it happened the first time (I keep a torque wrench in the Jeep since then).

Another possible cause can be replacing the studs by drawing them into the hub with a lug nut rather than using a press. I’m not sure on a Jeep but the interference fit between the stud and the flange can be so tight that drawing them in with a nut can actually damage the stud in the process.

The first time they were replaced in a shop and pressed in properly....however, on the side of the road this morning I had to draw them in with a nut. If I weren't replacing the axle shafts in a few days I would have them all replaced again.

Ya gotta do what ya gotta do on the side of the road.

I went hiking in Lower Salt Wash Canyon in Arches yesterday and decided to spend Friday night along Willow Springs Road so I could hit an even 80 nights for the year. I'm pretty sure I am done now. It was a great year! I'm already looking forward to 2019, even though I don't think I'll even try to top this number.
