Post your 2015 bag nights here! @Bob Wire is the reigning champ with 70 nights in 2014. Don't forget to post a pic!

There are no official rules, but a bag night here is typically defined by a night out camping in some form. It doesn't matter if you sleep on a tarp, in a tent, or in the back of your car. If it's camping, it's a bag night.

Total YTD: 2 Nights

Jan 17-19 > Solo at Lake Powell > 2 Nights

First bag nights for me for the year and first post-knee replacement. I probably way over did it, but it was worth it. The first night had a pretty nice sunset that just never stopped, even after it was pretty much completely dark out, stars and all. The bright one is Venus.

Thanks!

I'm thinking of playing this year just cause I've never kept track before. I know you said there are no formal rules but am I correct to assume you guys don't count overnight stays in huts or hiker hostels?

I count mine based on whether I had climate control. In a heated cabin = not a bag night. In a car without the heater running = a bag night. But I'd still have a hard time not counting a hut trip. Hmmm... Maybe it's just the spirit of a bag night?

Jan 9-10, Hurricane Deck - South Fork
Jan 16-18, East Hurricane Deck trail project

5 nights is a good start. The last trip beat me up so it will be a few weeks before I get out again.

1/16-19 Fox Valley, MO - 3 nights (personal), 15 nights (group)

I love how I can be on the leaderboard at least once during the year- January. Then DAA, Miss Buffalo, and everyone else basically come and clean house for the rest of the year. Gonna propose a change to the calcs this year- personal bag nights and group bag nights. Personal is self explanatory- the nights you spent in a bag. Group bag nights counts one night per person in the immediate group you are with, including yourself.

I've got 6 so far.

3 nights on the Inca Trail- Andes Mountains, Peru. Jan 1,2, and 3.
3 nights in Canyonlands. 2 Beautiful Hikes, Murphy's loop and Chesler park.

I've fallen woefully behind on editing pics though, so if you visit my flickr page, you won't get much of these trips-yet.

Well folks, we've got ourselves a clubhouse leader for "coolest trips during the winter". What was your guide/porter/backpacking situation on the inca trail?

It certainly wasn't the wilderness/solitude experience I'm used to in our great West, but it was alright ;). My wife really loves to travel, I study history and love to hike. This was a great time for us both.

To hike the Inca Trail you have to have a guide service. We went with Sun Gate Tours, and I can't speak highly enough about them. Our guide Richard was incredibly knowledgeable about the flora/fauna, and history of the area we were hiking in. Unlike other tour companies, Sun Gate won't sell you to another company if they don't fill up with enough people. For us, this meant we ended up being the only people on this tour. Spoiled completely, we had a guide, cook, and three porters for just us two. We had to carry only our pad, sleeping bag, and clothing.

I'm a tiny bittersweet about the whole thing. I love to carry my own shit, cook my own food, camp where I want, etc. That wasn't really possible on this trip. There are 300-500 people on the 27 mile trail everyday. I had to take the good with the bad, lots of people, but incredible scenery, company (my wife), and it's just damn cool to be walking on a trail constructed 700 years ago.
