2015/2016 All things snow thread

I'll add on here, but maybe micro trip reports are my thing... i seem to write about 500 of them in my head while hiking, but never get around to it when i get back. Anyways, i get out a lot in SLC for winter. i have a touring board that i split myself three seasons ago, and just bought myself a pair of skis for this winter. i headed out this weekend twice, snow was pretty darn good in honeycomb but a second day in silver fork was a bit of a rocky nightmare, everyone came out with huge gouges on their boards and santo even had to crowdsource a bandaid to control some serious finger-bleeding from a rogue rock. the season is coming, but maybe not quite here yet! @slc_dan , get yo stuff together! as a side note i went to an avy presetation at freeheel life, a telemark shop on west temple, and found out that they rent out tele setups for $20 or so for anyone who wants to give that gig a whirl. they also have a used gear store. i found my skis used at the gear room on ft. union with skins for under $150, ksl has a ton of deals, too.

this pic is at the top of silver fork on sunday:

Opening day at Targhee, 12" of fresh snow. Not bad for first day but insanely busy.

Then yesterday first day out on the fatbike in the snow near Kelly Canyon Resort, we rode a trail called Buckskin-Morgan. Broke the trail for the bikes over elk tracks and looked like someone had snowshoed down the trail. Snow was crunchy and good to ride on going out but softened up before we turned around and came back. Made riding back quite the workout!! I was certain I had forgotten how to ride a bike.

Herriman State Park Global Fat Bike Day 2015. I lead the B group ride. We had two new fat bike riders. Herriman will be grooming trails for fatbiking this winter. Pretty excited about that.

Managed a very quick trip to Yosemite. Only had a few hours in the park but it was amazing!!! Snow snow and more snow. I was in heaven. Got out the car to take a picture of the snow on the trees and the tree let loose of the snow on to my head. Lot of snow out of one tree.

El Capitan stayed hidden the entire time but the valley was still gorgeous.

Then of course there has been the fatbike adventures. My first downhill race, thanks to the guy from Florida he saved me from being dead last! Group shot is at Kelly Canyon before start of the race and other shot is riding Jolly Green Giants at Targhee. Usually ski in the morning and ride after lunch unless it is a powder day and then it is all ski.

I have to rent from IMT. I have downhill skis but no xc. If I like this I probably end up buying a pair.

Great moon out tonite.....by the way its Winter fest this weekend in island park...

The moon was beautiful! I was fatbiking last night at Kelly Canyon. Thanks for the heads up about Winter Fest I will have to find info on it.

So, yes. Cool.

Way fun. Great workout, and a great get away for when I can't be gone a whole weekend. I loved skiing as a kid, but couldn't justify the expense as an adult, and the circus of a resort was off-putting enough anyway. This was like the best of both worlds. No crowds, and some good hiking.

I'll just keep my eyes open for a deal, we'll see, you know.

Here are a few pictures from the last couple of snowshoeing trips I have been on...

Standing on the edge of Big Crater with my brother and son. I was hoping for blue sky so i could get some pictures from the top. No such luck it didn't stop snowing the entire trip including the three hour drive home... Craters of the Moon National Monument

The snow was deep everywhere but the ridges. I don't know why the wind never blows there.:)

I hiked past the camp ground on the way up but decided to swing in on my way down...

I had the place all to myself so i used the restroom and the grill while I was there...

I have plans to shoe into Goldbug hot-springs near Salmon, Idaho later in February. I made it there last June and would like to see it in the snow. I didn't take any pictures while I was there but it's the hot-springs I judge all of the other pools I visit by. The springs are hung on the side of a rocky mountain right in the middle of a set of waterfalls. It has several pools, one of them being an infinite pool and hot waterfalls that are like getting a massage. Here is a link to google images check it out. WARNING some of the google images contain a bit of nudity...

I have heard they allow fatbikes at Craters. Been tempted to drive over there on a Saturday and explore. My friends are always talking about this Goldbug Hotspring. Definitely on my list to check out.
