New to camping and need advice on a backpacking tent

Don't know that Black Diamond, but it's a good co. if you can get a good deal. We have a Copper Spur as well, and like it. Also have an REI tent I like that's a little heavier but very similar, quarter dome T2 plus. The thing about the light weight tents is it's not magical how they get light...

    Backcountry Food

When we eat oatmeal backpacking, we buy in in 25lb. bags, regular oats. Really cheap that way. Then we mix in dried fruit, cinnamon, brown sugar in a ziplock. Makes the oatmeal better. Another breakfast thing is grits. You mix water:grits at 4:1, so lot of food for little bulk. Add some butter...

    Across Utah Map

Wow, really cool. Since I haven't been on bcp long, hadn't read about your long trips. I just read one of your old reports, loved the story of going across Canyonlands. I've never done very long backpacks in the desert, but with a resource like this for water I can see doing it, thanks.

    Tips for solo backpacking

Yeah, living right in Grizzly country, I'd agree bear spray is the way to go. We have a rustic cabin right next to the Bob Marshall Wilderness, have taken our kids there a ton since they were babies, and still are confident about that. That's all we take there. Even the grizzly management guy...

    The Maze Overlook

Good pics. So there's others who do that in the snow, eh? The pic of the Flint Trail with snow really brought back memories. My Dad took me down it with about a foot of snow in about 1972. I don't think Hans Flat station was there, very deserted especially back then when the park was only a few...

    X-country skiing?

I cross country skied for years. Then I got invited to work for room and board at a backcountry ski business in British Columbia, where I learned how to telemark. I agree with @Nick it's way more fun than snowshoes. We would skin up all day, ski down in fresh powder all winter, every day. I've...

    Flashlights, Lighters, and Multi-Tools

I started using one of these cap lights, got this one for $7 with shipping, 0.6 oz. Small, light, and my hat is usually more comfortable than a headband. Not super bright, but enough for me. It wouldn't light way down the trail, but I could hike with it...

    Backpacking Stoves

Good chart and comparison Steve. Hehe, you forgot twigs and pan option. Fuel weight: 0 Stove weight: 0 Only pan weight. :D Course not the most convenient, granted. I still use my WhiperLite the most, even if not the most logical. I have it and the fuel is cheap.

The Devil and a Flash Flood

Yeah, good reminder, thanks for the story. I'd like to go down there and up to Happy Canyon someday, we almost did a couple years ago. It's amazing how fast those flash floods can come up.

It was the best of times, It was the worst of times...

Good story, and reminder on the keys. I like how a lot of packs have the little clip for keys in a pocket now. I had a ringtail cat in Arizona chew through the string I'd hung my food with and eat most of my food once. I had to do the same thing, go find what he'd left over for me. But...

    Backpacking Stoves

One way I used to do cooking when my stove quit working was just dig a hole the size of my fist, get a few little sticks, and cook that way. Then I could just put the dirt back over for no trace. Pan gets black, but not that big a deal.

    Backpacking Stoves

This reminds me of an old story that hopefully isn't too derailing. I was backpacking with a friend who'd never been before. We were camped in a nice meadow, little stream couple hundred feet away. I started water for coffee with my white gas stove, an Optimus that used flame heat for pressure...

    Thrift Store Finds

That's my wife's size. If you don't find somebody to pick them up and would consider shipping, I'd pay costs. Or maybe 2 trip reports?:D Or maybe pickup next summer, we'll probably come through there.

    Backpacking Stoves

Just thought I'd mention I have one of these. I bought it because we did the Kalalau trail in Kauai last summer, and the airline didn't allow any stove, with or without fuel for some crazy reason. I didn't want anything expensive in case I just left it there. So I mailed this one. I think I...

    Tips for solo backpacking

Speaking of animals, like Grizzlies, and dangers of them, I know of only one death by Grizzly in the Bob Marshall complex. That's over 1.5 million acres of Grizzly habitat. And that guy was a hunter, by himself, and was cutting up an elk, probably with blood all over. I'm surprised about how...

    Tips for solo backpacking

Duke, no, Nick has the one I meant. I hadn't heard about the story you're talking about. I would have been like Mike Turner in the couple of years I was traveling if I'd had a problem. I was single, travelling alone a lot of the time. It would have been too much to try to let anybody know my...

    Tips for solo backpacking

This is a fun thread to read. I'd agree with a lot of the benefits of solo trips pointed out in here. I did a bike (bicycle that is) touring for almost 5 months one year, in Mexico, US, and Canada. Included several backpacking trips after stashing the bike. I didn't have a tent, and a lot of it...

Now entering the ring... (sleeping pads)

That sounds like a great one then, kinda wish we'd gone that way. Yeah, my friend doesn't mind the noise at all either. Part of it I think was 2 of us sleeping right next to each other, more of a chance of it being a problem.

    Coyote Buttes in May

Looks like a cool spot, always have enjoyed the photos. I hate permits. I love Montana. As long as we don't do the Smith River (and have done that a couple times) or Nat'l Parks, you can go anywhere you want, anytime you want, camp anywhere you want. The freedom, that's half the allure of...
