There is a photo from the "manual" showing how to place the dynamite. I'm a little disappointed that they don't actually put a stick up the rear like I hypothesized

I worked on a trail crew years ago with a couple of wilderness rangers who had years of experience with this practice. It sounded like every experience was a learning experience. The time they learned to yell their intent several times before the detonation was when they fired the charges and the mule's head separated and went flying... and landed within yards of a secluded, and occupied, tent.
