Some wildlife observed from the towpath trail in CVNP.

This weekend snappers were as abundant as Subarus in a Yellowstone Parking lot.

I thought @wsp_scott mentioned an admiration for snakes on one of our past trips (or was it the opposite? ), so I took these for him.

A week ago, we had watched these goats from across the valley, and by the time we looped around an hour later they were right above the trail.

Those snake-squeamish can turn away.

The cat watching a snake instead of a lizard. When we first saw the snake it was stalking one of the younger lizards on the patio.



The colors on this young racer are quite nice actually. Some turquoise shades mixed in with the orange-brown spots, yellows and greens.

It was really fast and spastic. My son caught it, so we could get a photo, and then we released it next door.

We made a detour to a nature preserve in Patagonia, Az to see some spectacular hummingbirds.

Broad-billed Hummingbird. Very colorful and fun to watch



And the boss was this Violet-crowned hummingbird

This pine marten visited us every morning at breakfast in the BC backcountry. Too bad the cabin window was a bit fogged.

We have had one around the house the last few days, getting the sunflower seeds the birds drop

Spotted what I think are a pair of Hooded Mergansers on the pond this week. My first time seeing them here at home. Wonder if they are checking out the Wood Duck nest box I put up this fall.

Two roadside bears, and a whole lot of sheep, on a ride last week of a closed road that is gated from December to mid-May, as it passes through an important bighorn wintering area.

Not pictured is the brown-phase, black bear that ran full speed down the hill and across the road in front of us on Hwy 6. Pretty sweet, but no photos.

My favorite part of the desert in spring comes from these guys at night.






Lizards are fun too.

I thought this little series of an American dipper family along Soda Butte Creek came out pretty well.

Morning visitor. This makes bear number four in the yard so far this summer. I’m in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and only a block from the river so they cruise around here. This one is eating columbine that’s growing between the flagstones. In case anyone’s wondering, that’s the flag for Green River, Utah but it’s flying sideways.

The buffalo herd created a traffic jam for a bit.







Needless to say ... Jackie has a thing for prairie dogs













These guys were licking the salt off the road as we approached on our way out of the park the next day. They hesitated before heading into the forest and were looking at something ... and then we saw what they saw overhead.


There was a hot air balloon launch further down the road and some of the balloons were starting to drift over the road. We saw probably 6 or 7 balloons being launched or already up in the air.
