[Ugly]

Mostly yellow this time of year.
But a few others...

Most of the first week of August was fairly damp, but we did get out every day to enjoy peak flower season during our time looking after lodge operations at the Campbell Icefield Chalet.

Flowers were definitely on the wane last week on a camping and dayhiking trip along the Icefields parkway, but there were some good pockets of blooms hanging on in places.

A few scattered flowers were still hanging onto summer on Wednesday in the Alberta rockies:

But, the change to a fall color palette was evident:

After a lot of rain and now warm sunny weather the desert is showing some wildflowers in bloom and we even saw a JT with a flower bud

Death Valley Superbloom! March 6-9, we lucked out with comfortable temps and beautiful flowers, many different kinds. This was my first time in Death Valley. I will be back!

Desert Gold were everywhere - this was driving south toward Badwater Basin with the salt flats in the background

We were at Zabriskie Point for sunrise and then did the Golden Canyon loop - we were amazed to see these Phacelia lining the dry wash, and then over the next two days we saw this kind of scene more and more

My favorite springtime wildflowers are blooming! These are bloodroot flowers, and they bloom in pretty good numbers in the timber along the Missouri River here. They seem to have the uncanny ability to wait to bloom until just when spring has really taken hold and winter is behind us. That hasn't been much of an event this year, but in more "normal" years the bloodroot bloom is a sign I anxiously look for every spring.

We hit the jackpot with flowers in the Grand Canyon along the Escalante Route April 8-14. At some point, I'll put together a trip report, but in the meantime I wanted to share these pictures (chronological order top to bottom and back up). The cacti were beautiful; over the course of the week, different ones showed themselves - first the pinks, then salmon, peach, yellow, and deep orange. And tall agave stalks were all over the place. And yucca. And so many other flowers closer to the top and along the water at the bottom and in the washes. Breathtaking.







The first cactus I saw open. I had been hoping we'd see cacti and was very happy! Little did I know how many, many more we'd see over the course of the week.

If I didn't know better, I'd have thought these were roses.




I need help solving this mystery: How can there be two different colors right next to each other on the same plant? I know sometimes flowers change color after they bloom, but these were in very close stages of blooming, so I didn't think that was the reason. Does anyone know about this? I looked it up, but didn't find the info online satisfying.

I've never seen mountain laurel in the wild - only in the arboretum near me where they were planted long ago. They don't bloom here in Michigan until early June. Those and all your others are beautiful. Time for me to go for a walk in the woods to see what's going on here!
