It's been a slow start to wildflower season in the foothills and rockies of Alberta. A couple from a hike last week.
I liked these little yellow ones, a Draba of some sort, cradled in a sheltered niche on an exposed ridgeline.

The Prairie Crocus are always the first harbinger of spring, but it's been late in coming to the mountains.

More wildflower pictures from a morning mountain bike ride in the city. .
Western wood lily favours terrain with a mix of open meadow and aspen. Unfortunately it's showiness encourages picking which kills the plant, and it has become scarce in some areas:

Equally as showy were these gallardia aka brown eyed susan. They don't seem to be as vulnerable to picking and are flourishing right now in open grasslands:

First time I'd ever seen one of these (and there were many) up on the mountains. I literally googled 'alien looking plant on colorado 14ers' and while that didn't come up, the actual name is pretty humorous - "the funky thistle", Cirsium funkiae.

It was just named this spring, and is apparently relatively confined to certain mountain regions in the state:

My photos are horrible crops out of larger captures, but it has a large bulbous 'nose' very reminiscent of a squid.

The third week in August 2022 I had the great pleasure of completing the dixon wind river high route. Although it was a little late in the season for the best wildflower viewing, we still got to enjoy some wondrous wind river wildflower viewing.

Lovely reds and yellows near the beautiful peak lake and stroud peak.
